Representation matters—and sometimes it shows up in places people rarely think about.

I've known Jesus "Chewy" Hernandez since he was about one year old, so watching him become a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer has been incredibly special.

The funeral profession is one of the least diverse career fields in America, with Hispanics making up only a small percentage of funeral directors nationwide. Seeing a young Latino enter this profession reminds us that our community belongs everywhere—not only in the careers people expect, but also in the ones where compassion, leadership, and cultural understanding are deeply needed.

For many Hispanic families, having someone who understands their language, traditions, and culture during life's most difficult moments can make an immeasurable difference.

As an AfroLatina educator, I love highlighting success stories that expand our students' vision of what's possible. There are careers many young people have never even considered, and every trailblazer helps another student imagine a future they didn't know existed.

Congratulations, Chewy! Thank you for showing the next generation that service, excellence, and faith can open doors in every profession.

Jesus "Chewy" Hernandez

Four years ago, he began his professional journey in funeral service.

In 2024, he earned both his Funeral Director's and Embalmer's licenses, marking an important milestone in his growth as a funeral service professional.

When he's not at work, Chewy enjoys spending time with his family and friends and is an active member of Harvest International Ministry.

We're excited to have Chewy as part of our team and look forward to the compassion and dedication he'll bring while serving the families in our community.
