The question in my email inbox was simple enough: “Mike, what is the real goal of the fraternity?”

My first thought was to offer a concise answer, based on my opinion formed over 45 years as a Mason and as an instructor for the fraternity, and on my reading of Masonic authors who have tackled the question and provided an answer.

But then, I stopped and thought about the question.

I decided to search for some answers, and that search led me to the United Grand Lodge of England and the 3 largest grand lodges in the U.S.
