The Key School was founded in 1958 by several tutors from nearby St. John's College who were interested in offering their children the finest possible academic foundation. These college professors, convinced that children possess inherent intellectual vitality that schools generally do not reach, agreed to bring discerning teachers and promising students together in small classes. From the outset,

Key School worked to forge an identity that coupled experiential and innovative learning with a rigorous and essentially classical curriculum. The School's objective is not simply to teach children to be good students; it also bears the responsibility to encourage them to be good citizens and, over time, to internalize the core values of respect, responsibility, and honesty.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Charles “Chuck” Anthony, a devoted Key parent, former Vice President of the Board of Trustees, and steadfast steward of our school. For more than two decades, Chuck and his wife, Iris, were deeply woven into the Key community, raising four “Key lifers”—Zane, Isaac, Theo, and Jack. An architect, artist, and longtime Chair of the Buildings & Grounds Committee, Chuck helped shape the campus we know today. His favorite Benjamin Franklin quote, “Well done is better than well said,” beautifully reflects his lasting legacy at Key.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 20, at 3:00 p.m. at Temple Beth Shalom in Arnold, a space designed by Chuck. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Key School for a forthcoming fund honoring Chuck’s legacy or to the Temple Beth Shalom Building Fund. We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Anthony family.

Today we celebrate the Key School Class of 2026, graduates who have grown through curiosity, challenge, discovery, and connection. As they turn the page to their next chapter, we congratulate them on all they have accomplished and look forward to all that lies ahead.

Blue skies, big smiles, and nonstop fun! ☀️ Our Lower School students celebrated the last day of school with an action-packed Field Day full of energy, teamwork, laughter, and a little friendly competition. 🌊 Learning Beyond the Classroom at Assateague Island 🏕️

Key’s 11th graders recently completed an unforgettable four-day Outdoor Education and Integrated Science experience at Assateague Island State Park, where science came to life through hands-on exploration, collaboration, and reflection.

Students immersed themselves in field studies across four distinct ecosystems—dunes, ocean, marsh, and forest—gathering observations and data that will shape their final Integrated Science: Systems projects. From studying the interconnectedness of barrier island environments to experiencing the challenges and rewards of camping together, the trip blended academic rigor with personal growth.

The experience also created meaningful space for the Class of 2027 to begin reflecting on their transition into senior year, culminating in a powerful closing circle on the beach.

At Key, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls, and this transformative trip is a cornerstone of that journey.

Key Middle School Theater presents Charlotte’s Web tonight and Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Activity Building. Join Wilbur, Fern, Templeton, and Charlotte for a timeless story of friendship, heart, and a few happy tears.

Appropriate for all ages. Key students, faculty, and staff attend free. General admission tickets are $10 at the door.

It truly takes a village to transform Key’s campus into the Annapolis Book Festival 📚. Together, we created a vibrant, welcoming space that brought nationally renowned authors to our community, connected thousands of book lovers, and offered families hours of entertainment, activities, music, and exceptional food.

Thank you to our Key parents who served on committees, volunteered throughout the day, greeted guests with warmth, contributed as authors and moderators, and assembled truly outstanding raffle baskets.

Thank you to our Key students who escorted authors, guided Festival-goers, and delighted our youngest visitors with face painting and children’s activities.

And thank you to our Key faculty and staff who organized and promoted the Festival, moderated panels, and helped make Key’s campus shine.
