When Cicero was training in oratory, he choose to practice among his friends. One must imagine he did this because he desired feedback from his peers.

Outside assessment was the means by which Cicero made himself serviceable to the state. Because he was shaping his skills for the purpose of public utility, he allowed members of the public to evaluate his progress.

For the Roman republic, education was not complete until a student could prove himself capable of utilizing his learning on behalf of the state.

Consequently, assessments had to be built around evaluating a student’s readiness for shouldering the weight of civic duty – they were not just performed for the good of a student’s soul.

What would it look like for testing today to hold citizens to this high standard of responsibility?
