Building habits this time of year is more important than being motivated. Here's a great little video on ways to facilitate new habits.

You've probably wondered how to build a new habit, and trust me building a new habit is not an easy task, if it was easy everyone would do it. In the book 'T...

When Jerry Seinfeld was starting as a stand-up, he committed to a habit: Write one joke a day. It didn’t have to be long or even really be funny. It just had to be done. He tracked this with a calendar, and every day after he wrote his joke, he would cross out the date with a big red "X."

You'll often see this anecdote accompanied by the phrase "don't break the chain." This story is a great example of someone becoming great by using habits instead of motivation.

The two key takeaways from this for high performers:
1. Build habits.
2. Track habits.

Here is some interesting data from two riders tackling a cyclocross race with a significantly different approach to the course and pacing.

Riding an off-road race like a time trial isn't going to get you around the course the fastest.

The top file shows noticeable rest before the hard climbs, preparation to attack the course where big chunks of time can be made up. The bottom file is a rider keeping their efforts steady all the way through.

Varying the efforts, even giving back some time by recovering on the approach to longer climbs can allow you to ride the hills faster, making gains that outweigh any seconds bled away during strategic bouts of recovery.

Routine always beats motivation. Motivation is fickle and unreliable. The path to your goal is paved by habit.
