How José Andrés and His Corps of Cooks Became Leaders in Disaster Aid (Gift Article) 04/03/2024

Here's an opportunity to learn about this organization, offering local food, and therefore comfort in the face of war and tragedy. Reading the comments is also useful, including, "Jose and his crew should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work. They represent the best and bravest of humanity."

How José Andrés and His Corps of Cooks Became Leaders in Disaster Aid (Gift Article) Long before the killings of seven workers in Gaza, World Central Kitchen pioneered a new way to deliver emergency relief, using local labor and recipes.

Transforming trauma into healing power through the arts | The University Record 03/16/2024

Lois & I attended the powerful premiere of "Ni Une Más" in town, a collaboration of eleven organizations to bring injustice, malfeasance, deep cultural illness and deliberately ignored criminal behavior on the part of high level administrators within a least five higher level UM organizations having to do with a UM doctor, as well as a domestic assault and murder in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

The play focused on the impact on the survivors, not the criminals, including young 18 year olds, a young mother, a sister. The lead dancer who illustrated the impact of this was superb, as was the dance troupe and singers.

Multiple young students, at the time, in the UM athletic system were affected including football, basketball, wrestling, track. What was shocking to me is how long the abuse went on and who knew about it, including administrators I knew in 1979 - 2009.

Of those five senior administrators in my time at UM, two appeared to have tried to do something to stop the abuse. Three others that I knew and had met with over the years enabled it. Bo Shembechler reacted angrily hearing about the abuse from his own son.

I will list in the comments a few excerpts from the program held at Bethlehem UCC, a partner in the production and a worthy setting of this "Healing Bells" (a partner) artistic performance and premiere.

There will be a video shared later as the organizers asked that no photos be taken at the event. I recommend viewing it. Power in institutional positions, corruption, is well illustrated in this thoughtful work described in this University Record article listed below.

Transforming trauma into healing power through the arts | The University Record Composer and University of Michigan lecturer Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra has co-created a trailblazing world premiere production, “Ni une más,” that braids together music, theater and dance to tell the stories of those who have survived gender-based violence and to showcase their growing agency.

Opinion | Lina Khan: Noncompetes Depress Wages and Kill Innovation 01/10/2023

There are many excellent reasons to review non-compete agreements, that are often much too restrictive as well as being hard to enforce, AND which also generate needless lawsuits. It's high time non-competes are reviewed and used in a more limited manner.

Consensus decision making can get frustrating at times. This post may help, and includes a couple of downloadable tools too.

There's something just all the way cool about Santa magic.

Santa visited with 33 families over 3 days. He had visitors that chatted while sitting on his knee, a bench, a sled, the floor, moms lap, and across the room. He posed for pictures, read the letters, helped find lizards, and played peek-a-boo. He listened to the wishes, the stories about school, and answered all of the questions. There were belly laughs, apprehensive smiles, and eyes wide with wonder.

Thank you for the magic, Santa. We’ll see you again soon.

It you have a window box why not decorate it for the season ❄️
It’s easy and looks so pretty!
All you need..
Floral Foam blocks from the dollar store (I like to soak them in warm water first so they’re easy to work with)
Holiday Greenery
Some artificial twigs and berries
and Lights
I use wicker balls that I strung with lights.
If you try it let me know 🎄❤️☃️

Time for a little REVELN lifestyle sharing. This window box decorating idea is so sweet, and can be adapted to any type of container. I'd suggest something more earth friendly than single use plastic Oasis, but all other suggestions are delightful.

Happy Holiday season decorating to you and yours. 😊 🌲🎄🎅🧑‍🎄🤶❤️

PS: I have Winter Sowing and gardens as a lifestyle post (full, detailed blog post) in my comments. Winter Sowing season is almost here!

Success is a team effort. Who is on the team, who's in, who's out may change over time as a company adapts. However trust & caring about people *along with* profits beats out "human capital" in the results produced. Flourishing 100 year companies know this.

After more than a decade of living their work, tech workers are being let go. Meta laid off roughly 11,000 people this week. It’s joined by a number of other tech companies doing massive layoffs this year, and the trend serves as a stark reminder that your company, no matter how much you give, won’t always love you back.

The layoffs in Silicon Valley come after a decades-long trend at tech companies to “live and breathe” your job and make it part of your identity. A decade ago, Uber gloated that its workers “Always be hustling,” while WeWork espoused “Rise and grind.” These companies touted their rock walls, laundry services, and exclusive chefs to show management’s largesse. But really, many of these perks could also be interpreted as just ways to keep people in the building past their normal working hours.

With the Great Resignation and the more widespread acceptance of concepts like work-life balance, such corporateering has become passé, but that doesn’t mean the sentiment has died. Although people can get a lot of satisfaction out of their job, it can also be like a bad one-sided relationship — one that hurts employees who put their heart in the wrong place.
