Happy Disability Pride Month from Ann Arbor Academy!

Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of people with disabilities while recognizing the progress we have made—and the work that still lies ahead. It reminds us that disability is a natural part of the human experience and an important part of the lives of millions of Americans. It is also a time to honor the advocates, leaders, and communities whose efforts have strengthened civil rights, expanded opportunity, and improved accessibility for millions of Americans.

Disability Pride does not ignore the barriers that still exist. Instead, it challenges us to remove them. It reminds us that a person's value is never defined by a disability or by the obstacles they encounter. Accessibility is not an act of charity—it is fundamental to equal opportunity. Every person should have the opportunity to live in the community of their choice, make decisions about their own life, contribute their unique talents, and participate fully in community life.

At Disability Network Washtenaw Monroe Livingston, these principles guide everything we do. The Independent Living Movement teaches that people with disabilities are the experts in their own lives and should have the freedom to make the choices that are right for them. We believe our communities are stronger when everyone has the opportunity to contribute their talents and participate fully in community life.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, we invite everyone to join us in building communities where accessibility, independence, dignity, and full participation are not exceptional—they are simply the way we do things. Together, we can continue removing barriers, expanding opportunities, and creating communities where every person is empowered to live the life they choose.
