The goal of the Geriatric Learning Community is to raise awareness of the diverse aging population within the U.S., and globally, while promoting the specialized skills which are necessary to serve the population. The GLC has four objectives:
1) Enhance aging training and research activities – We offer the Specialist in Aging Certificate, host the Winkelman Lecture and alumni lecture series, orga
nize annual forums, and encourage room for growth and education in the area of aging.
2) Facilitate mutual learning among consortium agencies – We maintain connections with agencies that serve the older adult population.
3) Strengthen education and research linkages between SSW and communities – MSW and Doctoral students as well as faculty partner with social service agencies in Southeast Michigan to gain experience and skills in working with aging individuals.
4) Improve marketing of the gerontology program – We strive to make information about aging careers and opportunities available to the students and host an annual Careers in Aging event with the School of Social Work.
