UMSI Summer Internship Spotlight ☀️ “There is no single path to Google, nor is there a single journey once you are a part of this company,” says Micaela Ciambrone (MSI ’27). How did she discover this? She made the journey herself, spending the season as a UX research intern with Google’s Search team in NYC.

While helping to shape the future of AI search, Micaela has been surrounded by welcoming, supportive professionals eager to see her succeed. “Even the senior leaders on my team consistently make time to meet with me, provide feedback on my work, and show that they are truly invested in what I am doing and how they can help me grow,” she says.

UMSI played a direct role in getting her to Google this summer — specifically, Micaela calls out a mock interview with Krystle Forbes, UMSI’s associate director of career development. “She provided incredibly helpful tips on how I should sell and present myself,” Micaela says. “Krystle pushed me to not fixate on hitting all of the points I had prepped, but to stay true to myself and give my interviewers a genuine sense of who I was as a person. That advice really helped me succeed and approach the interview as a conversation rather than an overly rehearsed recitation of my resume.”

UMSI Summer Internship Spotlight ☀️ At JPMorganChase, a UMSI student is tackling operational bottlenecks in a massive legacy banking system and still finding time for card games with coworkers.

Tyler Tran (MSI ’27) is a product operations project management summer analyst. Between projects, he’s found a genuinely fun office culture: Someone’s always got a joke ready, and yes, he’s taste-tested the BTS Brown Sugar Oreo (good cookie, still not a BTS fan).

Streamlining payments, billing and regulatory compliance processes for the world’s fifth-largest bank by total assets — that’s important work. And no one’s going to begrudge a little diversion now and again.

While every startup races toward AI, two UMSI grads are building a platform that brings educators and learners closer together. And they’ve just signed a licensing deal with the university that trained them.

Chiao Lin and Anhua Wu met in a UMSI classroom. Now, their company Mixel Studio has entered into an agreement with the University of Michigan to bring its patent-pending mixed-reality platform, OXR, to market. Mixel Studio’s flagship technology enables a single teacher to guide an entire classroom through an immersive lesson at once.

What started as a passion project has grown into an eight-person company backed by multiple investors. As most startups are focused on automation, Wu says they’re headed the other way: “We really want to enhance that human-to-human interaction.”

UMSI Summer Internship Spotlight ☀️ One of our Bachelor of Science in Information students is working in cybersecurity at a “Big Four” accounting firm. Along the way, he’s gotten key mentorship from a U-M grad who’s been there for him since his first year on campus.

Nkwachukwu Onwudiwe (BSI ’27) is interning with KPMG for the second year running — this time, with the firm’s Cybersecurity & Technology Risk practice in Detroit. There, he’s reconnected with former coworkers and met fellow interns from across the U.S. during National Intern Training at KPMG’s Lakehouse campus in Orlando, a spot he describes as part resort, part conference center.

He’s giving a shoutout to a special mentor: Rayven Brantley, a 2023 graduate of the Ross School of Business, who’s supported him since they first met as fellow Wolverines.
