Barista Certification, Intro to Coffee Tasting, and Latté Art are just a few of our many course offerings What’s the most important component of a thriving independent coffee shop? Great baristas! BD Barista School evolved from the internal training curriculum of Black Diesel Coffee in Ann Arbor. In training our staff, we found there was a general lack of quality training resources for independent coffee shops. In an effort to train the most skilled, passionate baristas around, we made our own.

Certified Specialty Entrepreneur Course starts January 13th!
You have worked in independent specialty café, desired to own your own business, or simply seeking to add a place to serve your community. As a small business owner, you wear many hats, and often the biggest hurdle is where to begin!
This course has been developed over the past five years, and we continue to evolve it to serve the aspiring or contemplating specialty entrepreneur.
We begin with a foundation of skill-based training to build not only a functional knowledge but rather mastery as a professional barista and café operator. To this we add course material on specialty coffee from seed to cup, Tea 101, food safety, equipment selection and maintenance, menu creation, customer experience, supply chain management, cost, and inventory controls to begin.
This intensive, seven-week program provides prospective café operators, hospitality, and specialty beverage enthusiasts with the skills to not only become a professional barista, but how to incorporate a standard of excellence and to incorporate the experience into managing your operations.
The CSE program is recommended for aspiring retail café entrepreneurs, café management, and committed students to the profession of Retail Café Operations. An added benefit to the program, during and post participation, is to develop your own professional network with your peers, as you pursue and / or manage a retail operation.

A peak inside one of our espresso classes! You’ve probably heard someone say their coffee tastes “fruity” or “nutty,” but what does that even mean?
Sour, burnt, or stale are flavors we like to avoid. But the only way to obtain a softly nutty or perfectly sweet profile is by first learning how to properly identify what you’re sipping!
Our next espresso extraction class meets July 11, and it’s open to the public! Reach out to a fellow coffee drinker and spend an evening exploring your palate.
