Rachel Bowers didn't pursue a DNP just to earn another degree. She wanted to create meaningful and lasting change for the patients and communities she serves.

After nearly a decade caring for patients with advanced heart failure, Rachel used her Post-Master's DNP experience at UMSN to develop a patient support and education initiative that helped patients feel less isolated while improving self-care.

Now, she's bringing that same passion for innovation and leadership full circle in her new role as a clinical assistant professor at UMSN.

Making a World of Difference - Look to Michigan 06/15/2026

A childhood trip to the hospital for his mom at just eight years old is what inspired Joshua Truchan (BSN '25) to pursue nursing. With support from the Go Blue Guarantee, he earned his degree from UMSN and now cares for patients in the Michigan Medicine ICU.

Now, he's making a world of a difference.

A first for the Clinical Learning Center!

More than 40 Family Nurse Practitioner students participated in a pediatric simulation pilot featuring children ages 8 months to 14 years and their parents, bringing an added level of realism to the learning experience.

Following the success of this year's pilot, plans are already underway to make it an annual experience for future students.

We were also pleased to welcome visiting scholars from 國立陽明交通大學 National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, who are spending the week observing classes and engaging with our community.

Our series continues with Mary Richardson, a Research Area Specialist and Study Director at UMSN!

Mary was drawn to Michigan Nursing by the meaningful research taking place across the school and the opportunity to work with Dr. Patricia Hershberger and the TELL Tool Research Lab team, who has an impressive research program and a genuine passion for supporting donor-conceived individuals and families.

When she's not supporting research, you can find her spending time with her family, cheering on the Indiana Hoosiers (she's an alum but "Go Blue" has started making its way into the rotation 😅), watching baseball or reading a good book.

Fun fact: Mary can juggle and once worked as the Easter Bunny at the mall!
