Please join us this Friday as we welcome these three figures with expert knowledge of Western powers’ presence and relations with Haiti. Haitian Midwest Scholars Society

This panel discussion features:
- 1) Dr. Jackie Goodrich from University of Michigan, who recently co-published a research study (then self-retracted for further review), which measured total arsenic in domestic and imported rice samples collected from the same markets in Haiti;
- 2) Dieu-Nalio Chery, photojournalist awarded Robert Capa Gold Medal 2019 & 2020 Pulitzer finalist for the breaking news photography award. He is a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year at University of Michigan; and
- 3) Dr. Vincent Joos from Florida State University, who’s latest book “Urban Dwellings, Haitian Citizenships” (Rutgers University Press, 2021) explores the failed international reconstruction of Port-au-Prince after the devastating 2010 earthquake.

| Our friend Evens Emmanuel Lange, Communications Strategist and Independent Consultant, will host the second panel discussion, titled "Disaster, Humanitarian and Haiti's Demise" from 10:40 to 11:40 AM, at the University of Michigan Central Campus Union (Union-2210 ABC 2nd floor) on Friday, September 13th.

🗣 This panel discussion featured Dr. Mark Schuller, professor of Anthropology and Nonprofit and NGO Studies at Northern Illinois University. He recently co-authored with Independent Researcher Jessica Hsu the article “Humanitarian Aid and Local Power Structures: Lessons from Haiti’s ‘Shadow Disaster’” (Disasters, 2020) which investigates the confluence of humanitarian aid, centralisation, and politics.

| Our very own Websder Corneille, Adjunct Lecturer at Indiana University, will be the panel’s moderator for the first session, titled “International Capitalism and Haiti's Demise" from 8:40 to 10:00 AM, at the University of Michigan Central Campus Union (Union-2210 ABC 2nd floor) on Friday, September 13th.

This panel discussion featured:

Meet the two guest speakers of our third session for the symposium on Haiti, which will be held at the University of Michigan Central Campus Union (Union-2210 ABC 2nd floor) on September 13, 2024. This discussion panel with deibert, a major journalist who covers Haiti news, and Mathias Pierre, who is a Haitian political actor, about the complexity of Haiti’s current political crisis and, eventually, reflections on a possible way out of the situation.

| On Friday, September 13th, 2024, the University of Michigan and Haitian Midwest Scholars Society will host the first annual symposium "𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙞’𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣" at the University of Michigan Central Campus from 7:30am to 3:30pm EST.

The symposium will bring together scholars and specialists in Haitian Studies, filmmakers, photographers and community leaders to discuss current issues relevant to Haiti, the Haitian diaspora, and actors involved in development in Haiti.
