Welcome to the page of the Modern Greek Program, housed in the Department of Classical Studies, and shared with the Department of Comparative Literature. P Cavafy Professorship in Modern Greek is named after the author CONSTANTINE P. CAVAFY (1863-1933) and endowed by the Foundation for Modern Greek Studies. It offers courses and degrees for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as
regular lectures, symposia, films, concerts, exhibits, and other free events for students, faculty, and the broader community. When you use words like butter, school, hero, fame, symptom, agony, or character, you are already speaking Greek! When you talk about criticism, fanaticism, cynicism, cosmopolitanism, or criticism, you are referring to Greek ideas!
20% of English vocabulary comes from the Greek Greeks still speak today! Modern Greek courses cover language, literature, and culture, offering a systematic introduction to the Greek world of the last ten centuries, and especially to its contemporary social reality and intellectual achievement. As part of a broad liberal arts education, they promote the contextual study, both local and global, of contemporary Greek culture, placing particular emphasis on literary studies, critical theory, cultural politics, ethnicity, and diaspora (especially Greek-American). What can you do with Modern Greek? Mastery of Modern Greek enables students to consider careers in such fields as government, international trade, banking, print or electronic media, the travel industry, and other professions. After graduation, people with solid Modern Greek training have gone into law, medicine, engineering, education, journalism, public or private businesses and institutions as well as graduate school. Modern Greek gives students the close faculty attention of a small interdisciplinary program while putting at their disposal the vast resources of one of the largest research universities in the world. Prizes and Awards
Department of Classical Studies Modern Greek Prizes
Each year the Department of Classical Studies presents top undergraduate students with awards acknowledging outstanding achievement and excellence in their field of study. Winners are honored at the Phillips Classical Prize Ceremony held in April. The awards are made possible through the benevolence of University of Michigan alumni and patrons of the Classics. Modern Greek Prizes are awarded to top undergraduate students for excellence demonstrated in a Modern Greek translation competition in both the elementary and intermediate levels. Hellenic Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs Scholarship for Study in Greece
For the past four years, the Greek Ministries of Culture have offered a scholarship to a student who is studying the Greek language at the University of Michigan. The student is selected by the Instructor for achievement in the study of Greek. The scholarship supports undergraduate summer study at the Modern Greek summer session in Thessaloniki at the Institute for Balkan Studies. Platsis Prize
