The Michigan Pi Rho Chapter was formally installed on October 22, 1948, by National President D. Jennings and National Secretary-Treasurer D. Clark, upon arrival of a petition sponsored by National Vice-President F.L. Michigan Pi Rho remains one of the most active honoraries on campus. Our student services include free tutoring, exam files, student file photographs, student-faculty academic and social events, engineering contests, and mechanical engineering course evaluations. We also continue efforts to uphold the high level of student-faculty interaction within our department The highlight of each semester is the festive initiation banquet held for our new members at the end of the term. PI TAU SIGMA members are chosen on a basis of sound engineering ability, scholarship (upper 35%), personality, and probable future success in their chosen field of Mechanical Engineering. There are three grades of membership: Honorary, Graduate, and Active. Honorary members are technical graduates actively engaged in engineering work; or members of mechanical engineering faculties. Graduate membership is conferred upon persons who would have been eligible had Pi Tau Sigma been established earlier in schools not having chapters, or upon those continuing graduate study. Active members are selected from the junior and senior mechanical engineering classes at their respective schools whose mechanical engineering curriculum must be accredited by ABET.
