Since 2008, I have taught mathematics and statistics to students ranging from middle school to PhD level.

During that time, I have earned a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Michigan to pursue my interest in understanding how to help people learn mathematics. Seeing people develop confidence and skill in math is always fun for me. One thing I have noticed recently with several students is the value of flexible thinking. Being able to recognize important features of a problem and then choose an efficient strategy can be really satisfying and seems to help people grow in confidence as they recognize their skill.

If you would like to arrange math tutoring that promotes confidence and skill, please message me, and we can find a time.

Effective tutoring in mathematics learning support: the student perspective 08/31/2024

When tutoring, I think it helps to know about what students want out of it. This article documents some of the things students want.

One interesting quote to call out is the student who says, "[Don’t] comment on the ability that is required in order to do a particular type of maths."

Much of the tutoring I see advertised focuses on "filling gaps" or "plugging holes" in knowledge. In education research, this is called a "deficit perspective." As the quote above illustrates, students don't like being treated as if they have a deficit.

When I work with students, I focus on strengths and we build further understanding from there.

If you would like to learn more about my approach to tutoring or schedule a session, please message me to discuss.

With school beginning later this month, I am looking for 10 to 15 students I can help have success and confidence in math. I love to teach mathematics and statistics, so I am excited to open up my schedule for private tutoring.

For an overview of my experience and qualifications, you can read details in my “About” section. Please feel free to reach out to learn more about my approach, read letters from past students, and discuss pricing and scheduling.

As I begin accepting students, those who contact me first will have priority for scheduling. Appointments will be in Ann Arbor and in person either at a library or another location of your choosing.
