Mi Folk School

Join us over the course of three weekends to learn the essentials of 35mm photography. This course will show students methods for taking photos, using camera settings, and rules of aesthetics. Whether you’re completely new to photography or looking to slow down and reconnect with the craft, this course offers a thoughtful, practical introduction to the art and mechanics of shooting film. Demonstrating Instructors in the Murray Classroom:

Michael Daitch, Weaving, will be with us demonstrating how to properly work a floor loom, displaying last year's 19 Foot Long scarf made at the Folk Festival, and selling his wares.

Michael Kaufman-Schofield will be with us demonstrating basketry from natural materials and educating interested folks about death care and natural burial!

Kathy McMinn will be with us demonstrating basketry skills and all of the possibilities that basketweaving can accomplish and selling her wares!

Frains Classroom Demonstrating Instructors:

Jessica Bowden, Leather Craft Instructor, will be with us demonstrating some leather skills and showing off what Leather Craft 101 can open the doors to!

Iman Hathaway, Stained Glass Instructor, will be with us demonstrating some stained glass skills and selling some of her wares.

Tully Williams, Stained Glass Instructor, will be with us demonstrating some stained glass skills and selling some of her wares. She is a graduate of our apprenticeship program -- going from star student to stellar instructor!

In this workshop, students will see the colors/shades obtained from two different natural dyes, a variety of mordants and modifiers on wool fibers for at least 25 colors/shades with each dye.

Students will discuss best practices for natural dyeing and will dye two skeins of yarn in baths of their choice.

Join us for a weekend of woodworking! Instructor Joseph Traynor will instruct students on how to axe out their own spoon blank and then how to take it all the way to a finished spoon.

Hand Forged Knife: Intro to Bladesmithing is one of two beginner Blacksmithing classes offered at the Michigan Folk School. This class is a two-day intensive, offering a focus on crafting blades in addition to Blacksmithing basics.
