Enhancing mathematics discussions: exploring the impact of situating professional development around a summer mathematics program for children - Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education 08/19/2026

Nicole Garcia and Darrius Robinson, along with their coauthors Meghan Shaughnessy, Jillian Mortimer, D'Anna Pynes, Merrie Blunk, and Erin Pfaff, just published an article in the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education highlighting the importance of supporting teachers to skillfully lead mathematics discussions in their classrooms. Their study, which used the Elementary Mathematics Laboratory as a key setting, examined how two central components of the EML—live observation of teaching and practice-focused learning sessions—positively impacted participating teachers' own practice of leading math discussions.

Enhancing mathematics discussions: exploring the impact of situating professional development around a summer mathematics program for children - Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education Mathematics discussions are central for both teaching practice and student engagement with mathematics, though modal teaching practice in many countries often does not include discussion-leading. Our Practice Collaborative: Rehearsals and Other Simulations focuses on the highest-leverage way to build skill: deliberate, coached practice. This collaborative is for teacher educators who are ready to refine their design and implementation of rehearsals and other simulations in their courses.

Through our "video club" format, we will tackle the toughest dilemmas in leading simulations:

⏱️ How often should you pause to coach? What should you do when you're unsure of the best advice?

🛟 How do you create a safe, supportive, yet rigorous environment for reluctant candidates?

📚 How do you effectively integrate content knowledge and specific practice during a rehearsal?

You'll gain new strategies for managing these dilemmas and ensuring your candidates are truly ready for day one.

📅 Session dates (virtual): September 25, October 23, and November 20, 2026.

Our Practice Collaborative: Analyzing Practice Through Videos and Transcripts is a one-semester, virtual "video club" designed specifically for teacher educators like you who use videos and transcripts in your courses.

In this collaborative, you will:

🔎 Deeply examine the unique affordances of videos vs. transcripts.

💬 Discuss dilemmas in incorporating video/transcript analysis into your course schedule.

🤝 Share your own practice (via video of your teaching) and receive feedback from a community of peers and our expert facilitator.

This collaborative is about moving beyond simply watching videos to teaching candidates how to use them as rigorous tools for analysis.

📅 Session dates (virtual): September 18, October 16, and November 13, 2026.

Next week, we'll be announcing some exciting changes to our high-leverage practices (HLPs) of teaching!

Most of the practices on our forthcoming list have been in place for more than fifteen years—since we first published the list of TeachingWorks HLPs. Our new refinements are intended to clarify commitments that were previously obscured and to reflect the changing nature of teachers' work. These changes include:

✅ A more clearly articulated emphasis on equitable teaching
✅ Compression of a couple of practices
✅ Inclusion of responding to student thinking
✅ Attention to the prevalence of high-quality instructional materials
✅ Emphasis on a safe and productive learning environment
✅ More efficient language

Check back here next week for more details!

NEPC Review: Navigating the Math Wars: A Practical Guide to the Divides and Debates Influencing Math Instruction (Center on Reinventing Public Education, April 2026) 08/03/2026

TeachingWorks Director Deborah Loewenberg Ball recently reviewed the Center on Reinventing Public Education's (CRPE) latest report, Navigating the Math Wars: A Practical Guide to the Divides and Debates Influencing Math Instruction, for the National Education Policy Center.

While CRPE's report offers a helpful overview of the current public and professional debates about mathematics instruction, Deborah points out a critical gap: it falls short of providing the nuanced discussions of instructional practice that would support students' mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and engagement.
