The University of Michigan Carbon Capture Club's Project SAPPHIRE was recently named a winning submission for the OpenAir Collective's 2026 Carbon Removal Challenge!
The Carbon Capture Club is the student branch of the Global CO2 Initiative dedicated to innovation and education around carbon capture technology. Project SAPPHIRE is a team of 12 students from across engineering, biology, biochemistry, and computer science working to build a device to extract carbon and hydrogen gas from urban wastewater.
Municipal wastewater treatment plants are essential for clean water, but treating sewage releases millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, accelerating climate change. The project focuses on developing a modular device that can be submerged in wastewater tanks to trap greenhouse gases before they escape, offering a low-cost option for transforming routine city infrastructure into a tool for global sustainability.
As Carbon Removal Challenge winners, team members were invited to attend the Carbon Unbound East Coast Conference in New York City, May 19-20. They attended panel discussions, participated in networking opportunities, presented in a showcase, and met members of other winning teams.
Congratulations to the Project SAPPHIRE team!
