MEET THE HELICON 24-25 EXECUTIVE BOARD 🖼️:
AVERY NELSON (she/her)
PRESIDENT
What’s your favorite Helicon memory thus far: There are too many to count. I have to say, working on the publication was probably one of the coolest things I’ve done. We had a big design night at my house with almost all of the graphic designers, and we made popcorn, blasted some music, and just talked the night away while we worked. We gave each other advice and critiques on how to improve each other’s work, joked around with each other, and just spent the time learning more about each other. I felt a lot closer to the team after that night.
What conspiracy theory do you wholeheartedly believe in: I’m sorry, but you cannot convince me that there were not more people involved in JFK’s untimely end. You can present me with as many slideshows as you want, there was someone else involved (I’m looking at you Umbrella Man).
Why Helicon: Even though I didn’t join Helicon until first semester of my junior year, it was one of the first student organizations I heard about on campus when I first transferred half way through my sophomore year. Wanting to be more involved in campus, and befriending a few members of Helicon that were in the same major as me, I decided to give it a whirl - and it’s probably one of the best things I’ve done at Michigan. Not only are the people in Helicon genuinely some of the coolest people I know, I’ve met some of my closest friends at Michigan here. Also, it’s just really FUN! I think people tend to have a misconception that we simply sit around in the dark talking about dead artists (shout out Dead Poets Society), but it’s so much more than that. Whether it be slightly-too-competitive art history jeopardy, talking about conspiracy theories while eating ice cream, or late nights working on the publication at someone’s house, this club has provided some amazing opportunities, and I couldn’t be more proud, or excited, to be president of this club!
