Let's start with part 6 of the ECO PHYSICS knowledge series:
⚙️ The ozone generator – the key to chemiluminescence
In the last post, we got to know the photomultiplier tube (PMT) as the "eye" of the CLD system.
Today, we focus on the other side of the reaction: the ozone generator, without which chemiluminescence could not take place at all.
🌬️ How is ozone formed in the analyzer?
Ozone (O₃) is generated in the device by an electrical discharge – usually in a so-called corona discharge.
In this process, dry air or pure oxygen is passed through a high-voltage field, causing oxygen molecules (O₂) to split and recombine to form ozone (O₃).
🔌 The result: Freshly produced ozone is immediately ready for reaction with nitric oxide (NO).
🎯 Why is ozone so important for sensitivity?
The chemiluminescence reaction – i.e. the reaction of NO + O₃ → NO₂* + light – is only efficient if sufficient ozone is available.
📈 More ozone = stronger light emission = better measurement signal.
Therefore, the quality and stability of ozone generation has a direct influence on the sensitivity and precision of NOx measurement.
⚠️ Challenges in ozone production
The generation of ozone in the analyzer entails some technical requirements:
🧊 Dry air is essential – moisture can inhibit ozone formation and damage components.
🔋 Stable high voltage is necessary – voltage fluctuations lead to uneven ozone production.
🛠️ Material resistance – Ozone is highly reactive and requires special, ozone-resistant materials in the device design.
➡️ High-quality devices such as those from ECO PHYSICS therefore rely on durable, precisely controlled ozone generators for constant performance.
✅ Result
The ozone generator is one of the heart of CLD technology.
Only with a stable ozone source can high-precision, reproducible NOx measurements be carried out – a must for demanding applications in the environment, research and industry.
🔍 View
In the next part, we will look at why the ozone produced must be destroyed again after the reaction – and what methods are available for this.
🧯 Part 7: The ozone destroyer – necessary for safety and equipment life.
🤝 If you would like to know more about the CLD measurement method or the possibilities of gas analysis for NO/NO₂/NOx, NH₃ or ozone, simply contact Anthony Groat, Ahmad Nabiyar or Tom McKarns at ECO PHYSICS, INC.

What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. The name is a play on the date of June 19th, 1865. On that day, the Union Army made its way into Galveston, TX under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, and he announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free.
Even though we know that the Emancipation Proclamation freed African Americans in rebelling states (Texas being one of them, from as early as it when the Proclamation went into effect on January 1st, 1863) and we know that the Civil War had ended in April of 1865, it took a while for freedom to make its way to the western most rebelling state. Although there were enslavers who were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that it was actually enforced with the Union Army. June 19th freed enslaved people in the rebelling states, it did not free enslaved people throughout the nation.
