Given that commonly taught and practiced approaches to design continue to promote social, cultural, and economic inequality, we are taking a critical look at design tools and methods — in what ways do design methodologies promote inequality? What are others in our field doing to address injustice? How might we leverage our own work toward justice?

The Center for Socially Engaged Design invites you to join our book club!

“Mismatch: How Inclusion Shapes Design” by Kat Holmes, will be our platform to discuss design and inclusion. Join us for a series of public conversations as we seek to build on the national dialogue around anti-racism and structural inequality. By looking critically at our field, our research, and our practice we will identify tangible action steps to build into our work.

We will convene once a week over the course of 5 weeks via Zoom and utilize MURAL to collect our reflections.

Applications for the C-SED course and field immersion experience are now open!

In ENGR X55: Finding Genuine Design Opportunities, students learn the skills of socially engaged design during the winter semester, engage in hands-on practice with their teams and complete fieldwork with a community partner to identify potential design opportunities. Students will earn up to 6 credits for the course, meeting during the second half of Winter 2020 and ending with 6-8 weeks of field work in May and June.
