We are the caregivers and staff members of Mitchell Elementary School in Ann Arbor, MI.

Our Mitchell/Scarlett community is once again facing a difficult situation. On Wednesday, a Scarlett (former Mitchell) student's parent was detained by ICE after dropping their child off at school. As you can imagine, this has created tremendous uncertainty and hardship for the family. While there may be many ways our community may be able to offer support in the weeks ahead, our ability to communicate with the school community may be limited over the summer months, and we know we can help right now by providing financial assistance.

Because the school year is ending in just a few days, we do not have enough time to wait for the family, clearly in distress, to set up a GoFundMe. Instead, we are collecting donations directly and will provide the funds to the family by the last day of school so they can access support as quickly as possible.

If you would like to contribute (any amount is appreciated), please Venmo Kelly Pfeifer, Scarlett PTSO President (-Pfeifer-17; last four digits of phone number: 1185), who will convert donations into cash for the family. [Mitchell families may also send cash in a clearly labeled envelope marked "PTO” or “Scarlett Family in Need" to the front office.]

Please send any donations no later than Monday at noon.

Thank you for helping us show up for one of our own.

It’s a beautiful day to support our teachers!

06/01/2026

Want to show our Mitchell educators some support? Let’s join them this Wednesday, June 3rd at 6:15pm (see location and RSVP info below) for a rally: Plan for Us, Plan for the Future. Our amazing educators have been working without a contract for 150 days- that’s too long! This is a way you can show up for the educators who show up for students and families every day!

AAPS teachers have been without a contract for 150 days. Join us on June 3rd as we rally to Plan for the Future.

RSVP: https://www.mobilize.us/mea/event/959060/

We need actions that align with the value we bring to our students and to this district.

--This is more than just compensation. We need a contract that plans for the future of our schools.

--We need a contract that earns back the respect and trust of the educators that have already sacrificed their past earnings to keep AAPS afloat.

--We need a contract that ensures students have stability in the classroom with teachers and school staff that know them and our community.

--We need a contract ensures safety through the experience and relationships we build over time.

It's time, AAPS. Let's make a plan that shows you value your educators with actions that align with your public statements.

Plan for Us, Plan for the Future is a community rally that calls for investment in the people who shape our schools every day. Teachers, students, and supporters will come together to demand competitive wage increases, sustainable staffing, reasonable class sizes, and manageable health care costs. Our community needs a long-term commitment to public education in Ann Arbor.

Things to do:
•Wear "Support Ann Arbor Teachers" blue or "Red for Ed"
Grab your kids, neighbors, and colleagues!
Make a sign and BE THERE! Our goal is 1000+ people!

Things you don’t need to worry about:

No need to sign up for public commentary–local labor leaders, elected officials, parent groups, and community partners will be speaking on our behalf tonight!

It’s dinner time! We’ll have snacks and drinks for a family-friendly tailgate.

Here is your last chance before summer break to remind the Board of Education that our community and the AAEA will not accept another bad offer, and the time to do business differently is NOW.
