4th Annual Shared Memories: The Armenian Experience Through Objects and Stories

Friday, April 24, 2026 | 4:00-5:30 PM ● Weiser Hall 1010

In recognition of the anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the Center for Armenian Studies at the University of Michigan, in partnership with the Armenian Students Cultural Association and the Multidisciplinary Workshop for Armenian Studies, invites the community to the fourth annual Shared Memories: The Armenian Experience Through Objects and Stories.

This gathering centers on the power of objects as vessels of memory, survival, and identity. Across generations and geographies, Armenians have preserved history not only through archives and texts, but through everyday items carried, saved, and passed down. Photographs, letters, jewelry, textiles, books, religious objects, and household items often bear stories of loss, resilience, migration, and continuity that written records alone cannot capture.

Community members are invited to bring an object and, if they wish, share their story connected to it. These stories may speak to the Armenian Genocide, life in the Ottoman Empire, displacement and refuge, the Michigan Armenian experience, or the broader American Armenian story. Sharing is informal and conversational, creating space for reflection, dialogue, and intergenerational connection.

No prior expertise is required, and participation is flexible. Attendees are welcome to listen, reflect, and engage even if they do not bring an object.

Refreshments will be provided.

This event is open to the public.

Please join us Tuesday, April 7th from 4:30-6:00 PM in Weiser Hall 1010 for the Donia Human Rights Center's April event with Michael Posner. This event is cosponsored with the Weiser Diplomacy Center (WDC).

In his book, Conscience Incorporated: Pursuing Profits while Protecting Human Rights, Michael Posner examines the evolving role of large multinational companies in addressing human rights challenges tied to their business models, in global supply chains, in the tech sector and among investors. In the first part of this talk he will reflect on these topics. Posner also will address the crisis in democracy in the United States and in many parts of the world. Today's societies are increasingly polarized, fueled in part by social media and now artificial intelligence. Posner will examine this, the potential for business leaders to support democratic norms and the rule of law, and why they have been reluctant to exert it.

Michael Posner is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance at NYU's Stern School of Business. He is the Director of the Center for Business and Human Rights at the School, the first-ever human rights center at a business school. Prior to joining NYU Stern, Michael served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2013 as Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. From 1978 to 2009, he led Human Rights First, a New York-based human rights advocacy organization.
This event is free and open to the public.
