‘Four Years of Resistance’: Poetry reading and vigil commemorate resilience in Russia-Ukraine war About 40 community members gathered in the Kalamazoo Room in the Michigan League for “Four Years of Resistance,” a poetry reading and vigil reflecting on Ukrainian culture and human strength four years into Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures is proud to host the annual Shevchenko Workshop in Ukrainian Studies, October 25 to October 26, 2026.

Join us for a poetry reading by 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗵 from his new collection 𝘍𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 (Harvard University Press), translated from Ukrainian by Oksana Maksymchuk and Max Rosochinsky, in conversation with 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗳𝗳. The poems trace lives shaped by war, displacement, and memory, drawing on family archives and the layered histories of eastern Ukraine.

🕯 Following the reading, 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝟱𝟬 and the 𝗨𝗠 𝗨𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 will host a candlelight vigil leaving the Michigan League at 𝟱:𝟰𝟱 𝗽𝗺 for the 𝗨-𝗠 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴, followed by a brief procession to 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, where the Ukrainian National Anthem will be played on the carillon.

Professor Averbuch’s book, “L'ultima cena del mio corpo”, translated into Italian by Alessandro Achilli, has been published by Interlinea Edizioni. The translation was supported by a prestigious House of Europe program awarding grants for the translation of contemporary Ukrainian literature.
