CHS’s Housing Bureau for Seniors (HBS) has been hard at work bringing back a creative solution to the affordable housing crisis facing many older adults in Michigan. Beginning in 2025, the Housing Bureau for Seniors provided consultation services to the Washtenaw Housing Alliance's (WHA) Shared Housing Program. HBS and WHA, in turn, provided consultation services to the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, which is now also developing a shared housing program. The 3 agencies presented their programs at the Building Michigan Communities Conference on May 13, 2026.
Shared Housing is a long-term living arrangement where people share a home, each with their own private space and shared common areas in exchange for chore services and or reduced rent. Shared housing has many advantages for older folks including companionship, a sense of security and well-being, an opportunity to “give back” to the community and increased financial resources. For seekers, it provides affordable rent, companionship, and a quiet home environment. Shared housing is a win/win situation for all the parties involved. Continuing our coverage of CHS’ Housing Bureau for Seniors (HBS), we’d like to highlight Arissa Dooley, the HBS administrative assistant.
Arissa joined the team in November 2023 and is an integral part in making HBS work smoothly. She keeps everyone in the team apprised of changes and new work procedures, learns new software apps and teaches them to other team members so that they can stay on the “cutting edge”, performs the background heavy lift for the AARP Michigan Foundation Tax Aide Program and Senior Living Week – HBS’ two big annual events and seasonally decorates her cube, making the office a more enjoyable place to work.
HBS thanks Arissa for keeping them organized and functioning like a well-oiled machine.

Finding safe, affordable, and supportive housing can be overwhelming for older adults and their families — but you don’t have to navigate it alone. CHS's Housing Bureau for Seniors (HBS) is dedicated to helping seniors maintain stable housing, explore affordable housing options, and access valuable community resources that support independence and dignity.
Whether someone is seeking housing guidance, supportive services, contemplating downsizing and moving to a senior living community or needs assistance through their eviction and foreclosure prevention programs, the HBS team is here to provide compassionate support and connect older adults with the help they need. Together, they help older adults remain safe, secure and living sustainably in a place of their choosing.
