Second-year Graphic Design students kicked off the semester with a quick creative challenge: make a visual New Year’s resolution they can realistically pull off this term.

They had 45 minutes. That’s it.

Big ideas, fast decisions, and plenty of creative energy in a short design sprint.

This semester’s ice breaker for first-year students was to draw Charlie Brown from memory.

It's an exercise to demonstrate how our brains recall simplistic symbols over detailed imagery. Such a fun challenge! Try it, it's harder than you think. 😉

Our second-year Graphic Design students are gearing up for Portfolio Review Week, Dec. 8–11, and we’re looking for mentors to help guide them as they prepare for Portfolio Day in April.

If you’re passionate about supporting emerging designers, we’d love to have you join us. Sign up to review portfolios, offer feedback, and help students strengthen their presentation and interviewing skills.

Over 35 students from DMACC, Simpson College, Grand View University, and Iowa State University took part in this year’s event. Our group toured top advertising agencies — Lessing-Flynn and Two Rivers Marketing — along with in-house marketing teams at Athene, KCCI, and Pella Windows & Doors.

It was an inspiring, behind-the-scenes look at creative careers in action!
