Homeschool Band of Central Iowa offers individual and group lessons to secondary homeschool students on wind and percussion instruments as well as multiple opportunities to play in chamber groups with other students. Our program has more than doubled in size in our first year and look to expand opportunities for students as the program continues to grow!

¡Hola! Exciting news Homeschool Arts is launching Spanish classes, taught by our board VP, Jose Clavell! Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Jose is a native Spanish speaker excited to share his language and culture with everyone who signs up.

We have an immediate need for scholarship funds - we have 4 students who have let us know they cannot participate in choir or instrumental lessons unless they are covered by scholarship. They REALLY want to start taking lessons and getting involved in the band and choir! You can personally provide a student with one trimester of both private vocal or instrumental lessons and band or choir for just $350. Because of our non-profit status it is tax-deductible! It’s time to sign up for the fall trimester! Homeschooled, private schooled, public schooled?! We welcome all students who want a small, close-knit community to learn music with! Now enrolling: band, jazz band, instrumental lessons, vocal lessons, beginner/intermediate piano lessons, choir (8 years-hs seniors), Jr music class (4-7 year olds). We can’t wait to make music together this fall!

This is really frustrating as instruments are already a huge expense for many families providing a music education for their child. Recognizing that the cost is soon to go up for many new students, we want to remind you our Homeschool Arts non-profit has a free instrument lending library for students to use as needed. If you have an instrument in good working condition that you would like to donate to our program, you will receive a tax write-off for your donation and we will make sure to get the instrument into the hands of a student who wants to play! We also accept donations that we use for both scholarships and instrument purchases.

Meet Jose Clavell, our new voice teacher and Vice President of the Homeschool Arts Board! (Kylie Newhard will still be directing choir and leading Jr. Music) Jose holds a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Western Illinois University and has led music and worship at Ankeny First United Methodist Church since 2016. He also serves as President of the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble board. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Jose brings warmth, experience, and a passion for helping young singers find their voice. When he's not teaching, you'll find him running his bakery, Boricua in the Midwest, or out in West Des Moines running agility courses with his dog, Poppy. It’s time to reserve your lesson spot - message us today about weekly lessons! Haven’t started an instrument? No problem! We can help you try the different instruments to pick which works best for you! Lessons are $30 per week and are a half hour long. Not homeschooled? No problem! We teach kids no matter how they are schooled. We are a great fit for students who are looking for a close-knit, smaller ensemble experience!

It’s time to start signing up! All ensembles are $50 per trimester. Choir meets twice a week and is currently for mature 8 years-high school. Jr. Music class is an energetic class that teaches elementary music concepts through movement, singing, percussion, and more!
