This is pacific red elderberry. Sambucus racemosa

Though it has a long history of edible uses by native Americans. It is largely referred to as toxic in most foraging manuals. That’s because the berries and seeds contain cryogenic glycosides in high amounts, which can release hydrogen cyanide when consumed.

It grows along the acidic northwest all the way to Alaska, and you’ll see the berry clusters look much different than other elderberries.

Native peoples would prepare red elderberry in a way that limits seed intake, and would cook the berries, which lowers the amount of the harmful glycosides. So never eat them raw, and limit the amount of cooked berries you consume, especially if seeds are present. These grow in very lush environments so there will almost always be options.

My next wild plant is course is coming up in Southern California, and I hope to see you there.

Hills are high points on the landscape which go downhill on all sides. Some are often referred to as peaks. Ridges are continuous runs of high ground, which connects high points. They go downhill on two sides.

This is the goldenrod flower, of the Solidago genus. They bloom late in the summer and they’re very important for pollinators, hundreds of species of native bees, butterflies, and more all depend on them. Songbirds eat the bugs they attract and their seeds as well.

The California species make an excellent tea, and the plant been historically used for; Urinary tract support,
* Mild diuretic effects
* Sore throats (tea or gargle)
* Minor wounds (poultices)
* Digestive complaints
* Muscle soreness

Modern studies suggest some species contain Flavonoids
* Saponins
* Phenolic acids
* Antioxidant compounds

There is some evidence for anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.
