A Great Transportation Update! 🚌💙

Cherokee County Schools has worked diligently to recruit additional bus drivers and address the transportation challenges our district has experienced over the past several school years.

We are excited to share that, as of today, all but ONE bus route has been assigned to a driver! 🎉 Our Transportation Director, Justin Dockery, is actively working on a plan to provide coverage for that remaining route.

This progress would not have been possible without the many people who have helped spread the word and recruit new drivers. Thank you! We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has signed up to drive, returned to driving, or encouraged someone else to join our transportation team.

While we celebrate this progress, we still have work to do. We need to fully staff that final route, and we are continuing to recruit substitute bus drivers to provide additional support when needed. Please continue to share the word with family, friends, and community members who may be interested in becoming a CCS bus driver.

A few important details:
🌟CCS covers the costs associated with obtaining the required bus driver license.
🌟Starting pay for an inexperienced bus driver is $16.30 per hour.
🌟Drivers are guaranteed a minimum of one hour of pay per route when you drive. For shorter routes, driving both the morning and afternoon routes could provide a minimum of two hours of pay per day.

Most importantly, we love and appreciate our bus drivers! Thank you for the important role you play in getting our students to and from school safely each day. 🚌❤️

If you are interested in becoming a bus driver or have questions about obtaining your bus license, please contact Justin Dockery, Transportation Director at 828-837-2722, ext 3602.

Thank you, Cherokee County, for helping us move closer to having every route fully covered! Together, we are making a difference for our students and families! 💙🚌

Congratulations Ms. Barb!! You’re the best!

Cherokee County Schools is proud to announce Barbara Johnston as our 2026 Exceptional Children (EC) Educator of Excellence! 🏆

Barbara serves as one of our district’s Occupational Therapists, supporting students and staff at Murphy High School, Andrews Elementary School, Andrews Middle School, Andrews High School, Hiwassee Dam School, Ranger Elementary School, and our Pre-K programs throughout those communities.

Since joining our EC Program in October 2023, Barbara has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting students, collaborating with educators, and helping ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Barbara was selected as this year’s EC Educator of Excellence by a vote of our EC principals, teachers, and teacher assistants, making this recognition an especially meaningful reflection of the respect and appreciation she has earned from her colleagues.

Barbara will be formally recognized in November at the NCDPI State EC Conference at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

👏 Congratulations, Barbara! We are incredibly proud to have you as a member of the Cherokee County Schools team. Thank you for the difference you make in the lives of our students and families every day!

🌟We are proud to celebrate YOU, Barbara! 🎉

📅 Planning Ahead for a Successful School Year!

Yesterday, our district leadership team came together to kick off the new school year with a shared focus on supporting student success. One important topic of discussion was the value of good student attendance and the role it plays in helping students stay engaged, connected, and on track for learning.

Last night, the Cherokee County Schools Board of Education also approved amendments to our Attendance Policy (Policy 4400), reinforcing our commitment to supporting strong attendance across all grade levels and schools.

As part of this effort, our district leadership team wanted to provide families with a helpful tool for planning ahead. We created a calendar highlighting scheduled days off, early dismissals, teacher workdays, holidays, and other opportunities that create longer breaks from school.

Our hope is that this calendar will help families plan vacations, appointments, and other activities around the school calendar whenever possible, allowing students to enjoy those opportunities without missing valuable instructional time.

We encourage families to take a look, plan ahead, and make every school day count! ❤️📚

Thank you for partnering with Cherokee County Schools to support strong attendance and student success!

We are getting excited! Come out and help us make our schools beautiful!!
