This semester our department lost our lead Darryl Runyan. He is a talented creative and amazing teacher. And we say “is” because even though he isn’t with us anymore, his legacy is still at the heart of our program. Darryl knew when to be the push many of us needed to reach that next level. But he also knew when someone just needed a helping hand. His passion for design and technology was inspiring and spread to those around him. The legacy he leaves behind will be the example this department follows for many years to come.
Darryl, thank you for the time you dedicated to both your coworkers and your students. We won’t waste the passion you left in your place.

Drawing in the Snow! Fluid Sim Portfolio 10/30/2025

For the past several weeks students in ID216 Advanced 3D Design have been learning about fluid simulation and dynamic paint in Blender. After learning the concepts they were tasked with creating a mini portfolio to showcase what they learned. Here are a few of the best ones. I am very proud to share the work of these amazingly skilled, talented hard working students:

Drawing in the Snow! Fluid Sim Portfolio For the dynamic paint portion of my fluid sim portfolio, I decided to have a chess piece draw the blender symbol in the snow! I love how it turned out and it's simple yet pretty!

Summer may be coming to a close, but there's still time to enroll for the fall semester at Butler Community College. Some of the great classes we're offering this semester are Game Design 01, Graphical Production 01, Animate Fundamentals, HTML and CSS, and many more!

Our faculty don't just teach students skills, we teach them how they can be used across multiple practices. When our students learn about 3D modeling, they learn how that can be applied to prototyping. When they learn about branding, they learn how that's used in product design. If you want to learn the Fundamentals of 3D Design or how to use branding to help with Graphical Production, swing by Butler Community College and apply now.

Professor Jon Simpson 3D printed these Butler Community College logos. After throwing a little hardware on, we now have some awesome keychains. Our students will be learning how to make merch like this in our Digital Media degree.

As we continue to enjoy finals being over it is time to celebrate another student's outstanding work. This time from ID113 UX/UI. In ID113 students learn the fundamentals of Figma (software) and the concepts behind creating positive User Experiences (UX) and intuitive User Interfaces (UI). Figma allows the student to quickly prototype and iterate their design. Here Nathan Anderson used what he learned to create this modern portfolio to showcase his student work so far. Great job Nathan!
