Boys' Swimming & Diving: 10th Straight New England Title

(Andover, MA) – Three weeks after achieving 87% personal best performances at Easterns, and two weeks after having many swimmers go even faster at the Exeter dual meet, Andover Swimming & Diving came together to achieve 88% personal best performances at New Englands, a remarkable feat that secured its 10th consecutive New England Championship and 15th since 2007.

To begin the highlights, Andover’s great senior class of David Frahm, Nick Koura, Woori Lee, Eric Nie, Oliver Stabach, and Ethan Zhu led the way in the meet, with all of them achieving best performances. The meet began with Lee, Zhu, Nie, and Koura each having best-ever splits in the 200 Medley Relay, and each went on to achieve best times in each of their two individual events. Stabach had his best performance ever in the 100 Free and was just off in the 200 Free, while Frahm had his highest diving score of his career.

Entering the season, Andover knew the loss of its three top breaststrokers with the Class of 2025 would need to be addressed. Here, too, this year’s seniors stepped up. Zhu, Lee, and Nie placed 4th, 5th, and 6th in the event—each in a best time—and earned enough points to secure Andover’s team championship. It was Nie’s first time swimming the race in a championship meet as well as only the second time for Lee, and for Zhu, it had been two years since having a best time.

As the only swimmer to win every time he got in the water—100 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay—Lincoln Tomlinson ’27 was awarded the Babcock Award as the outstanding swimmer of the meet in the men’s competition as selected by the league’s coaches. He joins other Andover winners of the award, all of whom won in their senior years: Mark List ’74, David Mainen ’89, Rob Hill ’91, TJ Durkin ’99, Juh Oh ’12, Christopher Xia ’23, and Raphael Sibuet ’24.

As he has been throughout the season, Tomlinson was joined in the 200 Free Relay by Jay Wei ’27, Cale Barker ’28, and Stabach. Following a 20.63 opening leg from Tomlinson, Wei dropped at 19.97 to become the first Andover swimmer under 20. Barker and Stabach followed, both splitting 20.28. With the 1:21.16, the relay established new New England, Meet, Pool, and School records, and the time would have placed third in the United States last year among all public and independent high school swimming teams.

At the 2026 Eastern Swimming & Diving Championships in Lancaster, PA, the Andover divers, coached by Belinda Wolf, all placed in the top 24. Karla Safarikova ’27 placed 10th, Caroline Bresler ’29 placed 21st in the girls’ competition, while David Frahm ’26 placed 7th and Victor Hillier ’28 placed 17th.

Karla and Caroline contributed to a 9th-place finish for the Girls’ Team. For the swimmers, coached by Hillary Kavanagh and Catherine Carter, Katherine Feng ’27 placed 12th in the 100 Fly and 14th in the 100 Free. Aimee Qi ’27 placed 16th in the 100 Fly and 11th in the 100 Back. Chloe Ru ’27 placed 9th in the 50 Free and 6th in the 100 Back. Hannah Song ’27 placed 5th in the 200 Free and 4th in the 500 Free, and Sophia Tolokh ’28 placed 18th in the 200 Free. Many other swimmers achieved best times. The Girls’ 4x50 Medley Relay was 7th; the 4x50 Free Relay was 11th; and the 4x100 Free Relay was 7th.

Andover Defeats Exeter for 20th Consecutive Year

(Andover, MA) – For the 20th consecutive year, the Andover Boys’ Swimming & Diving team was able to hold off an always strong squad from our neighbors up north.

This year’s meet again combined the “varsity” and “junior varsity” competitions with the same coaching staff—David Fox, David Gardner, Hillary Kavanagh, Eliot Davenport—leading both.

In the “junior varsity” competition, Andover performed remarkably well as swimmers raced in their final meet of the season. Andover won the competition 118-45.

Some highlights:

Michael Bria ’27 and Enrique Mercado ’27 raced their first 100 Freestyles ever, while Merson Tang ’29 did his first 500!

14 other non-seniors achieved at least one best time: Joao Carreiro ’27, Connor Chen ’29, Carlos de Siqueira-Castro ’27, Lane Fender ’29, Travis Guan ’29, Phillip Jeong ’27, Cyrus Law ’27, Benjamin Levchin ’28, Gaven Morales ’29, Jacob Shin ’29, Cooper Simon ’28, Alex Tong ’29, Dean Vaitsos ’27, and Bruce Xiong ’29. Unfortunately, Carter Chen ’28 had to miss the meet.

The seniors in the meet also swam great with many best times. Nathan Egbuna has taken more than 5 seconds off his 100 Free as a member of the team; Vincent Giancola has taken more than 21! Haesou Im started racing the 200 IM in his final season and dropped more than 7 seconds in three months. Alex Ren and Will Sueling had great seasons. Co-Captain David Porto ended his career having dropped more than 42 seconds in the 500 Free since 9th grade!

In the “varsity” competition, Andover swam very well with many swimmers racing faster than they did at Easterns last week.

Folks who had at least one best time: Cale Barker ’28, Eric Chang ’28, Soohan Cho ’29, Owen Huang ’28, Beckett Kavanagh ’29, Ian Kim ’28, Nick Koura ’26, Ryan Loh ’28, Jay Wei ’27, Simba Xiong ’28, and Haoyu Zhang ’27. Eric Nie ’26 had his best dual-meet performances ever in the 200 IM and 500 Free. Co-Captains Woori Lee ’26 and Ethan Zhu ’26 swam well, earning valuable points. And Brandon Xu ’26, who is running the Omega timing system for us this year as a manager, swam his first 100 Breast.

In the diving competition, Captain David Frahm '26, Victor Hillier '28, and Daniel Matloff '28 placed 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. They are coached by Belinda Wolf.

In the 200 Freestyle, Co-Captain Oliver Stabach ’26 broke Max Hunger’s Meet record with a 1:40.27, which is faster than he swam last week.

In the 100 Freestyle, Lincoln Tomlinson ’27 broke Raphael Sibuet’s Meet record with a 45.02.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, Tomlinson, Wei, Barker, and Stabach broke Exeter’s Meet record as well as Brunswick’s Pool record in a zippy 1:22.43.

Easterns: Andover Boys Runner-Ups at Prestigious Championships on 87% Personal Bests

(Lancaster, PA) – Since 1935, the Eastern Swimming and Diving Championships has been the most prestigious high school competition in the United States. With more national records set at Easterns than any other, the meet has been dominated historically by some of legendary programs in swimming history: Bolles, Germantown, Mercersburg, and Peddie, among others.

After a 40-year hiatus, Andover returned to the Eastern Championships in 2013 and placed 4th, which it again accomplished in 2014—a meet that included Andover’s first-ever Easterns relay win (200 Medley). For a couple of reasons, Andover missed a few Easterns but returned in 2017. Since 2017, Andover has five championships, three runner-ups, and one third-place finish.

Entering the 2026 meet, Andover knew it needed two remarkable preliminary sessions that transcended its seeds. Across those two preliminary sessions, Andover outperformed its seeds by more than 230 points. No other team outperformed its seeds by more than 70 points—most barely matched them. Indeed, as several Andover parents and coaches across Easterns noted, the 2026 performance may have been Andover’s best, even though it did not end in a championship.

Across the meet, Andover swimmers achieved personal best times in 87% of swims, a remarkable accomplishment.

Certainly, a highlight of the meet was in the 4 x 50 Free Relay. Lincoln Tomlinson ‘27 broke Jay Wei’s Upper Record, set just about 60 minutes prior, by leading off the first 50 in 20.60. Wei ’27 followed in 20.11. Cale Barker ’28, fresh off setting the Lower Record in the 50 Free split 20.20, and Oliver Stabach ’26 anchored in 20.51. The final time—1:21.42—set new EASTERN, NEW ENGLAND, and SCHOOL Records. You can watch the race here. Since 2014, Andover has now, at some point, held the Eastern Record in each of the three relays as well as in six of the eleven swimming events, a remarkable achievement for a program set within the larger project of an Andover education.

On day one of the 2026 Eastern Championships, the Andover Boys’ Team had an extraordinary prelim session, which included four members making the finals in the 200 Free, Eric Nie ‘26 making his first championship top-8 final ever, a new Lower Record in the 50 Free by Cale Barker ‘28 (20.75), and more great swims!

Highlights of the evening session included an Eastern, New England, and School record in the 200 Free Relay: Lincoln Tomlinson ‘27 (20.60), Jay Wei ‘27 (20.11), Cale Barker ‘28 (20.20), Oliver Stabach ‘26 (20.51): 1:21.42!

Also, Cale lowered his Lower Record in the 50 to 20.74. Jay set an Upper Record in the 50 at 20.66. Lincoln set an Upper Record in the 100 Fly at 49.16, and then 20 minutes later, broke the record Jay had just set at 20.60.

Lots of other personal bests, great racing.

Since first going to Easterns, historically the most prestigious high school meet in the nation, in 2013, Andover has now set the Eastern record in each of the three relay events and in six of the eleven swimming events. No one would have anticipated that thirteen years ago.

This is an update on 2025 Commencement, Reunion, and some end-of-season awards!

**Class of 2025 Graduates**

(Andover, MA) – The great Class of 2025 graduated today. During its time on campus, the Class of 2025 went 23-0 in dual meets as well as won four New England Championships and three Eastern Championships.

Tedy Berman (Armonk, NY)
Tedy began his diving career at Andover, and in his senior year, he scored at both the Eastern and New England Championships. He will matriculate at Middlebury College.

Oliver Feng (Plano, TX)
Oliver concludes his Andover career as an 11x All American, a School Record holder as a member of the 4x50 Free Relay, and a New England Champion in the 50 Free. He will matriculate at Northwestern University.

Pippin Kantakom (Bangkok, Thailand)
Pippin is the New England Record holder in the 100 Breast, and he is the School Record holder in the 100 Breast, 200 IM, and as a member of the 4x50 Free Relay. He will matriculate at the University of Pennsylvania.

Brian Lee (Cote Saint-Luc, Quebec)
At the end of two seasons, Brian is an All American in the 100 Fly and 4x50 Medley Relay. He will matriculate at Columbia University.

Sean Niu (Newport Beach, CA)
A four-year member of the team, Sean has continually achieved best times, especially in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke. He will matriculate at Purdue University.

Daniel Seong (Wyckoff, NJ)
Team Captain Daniel Seong holds the 10th and 11th Grade Records and is the former School Record holder in the 100 Breast. He will matriculate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Albert Tsao (Cambridge, MA)
Albert has consistently earned best times across this four years at Andover. He will matriculate at New York University.

Ben Zhou (Larkspur, CA)
Ben departs Andover as an All American in the 4x50 Medley Relay and a member of the All-NEPSAC team in the 100 Breast. He will matriculate at the University of California at Berkeley.

**Legends Return!**

(Andover, MA) – In another repercussion of the COVID-19 Pandemic, this year’s Reunion was a big one: essentially, the 50th for both the Class of 1970 and 1975, the 25th for both the Class of 1995 and 2000, and the “Commencement” Ceremony for the Class of 2020. It was a terrific weekend.

Among the highlights:

The weekend began on Thursday with Coach David Fox giving Andover Legend John Kingery ’75 a tour of the old Borden pool and the new Christopher Lynn ‘65 pool in the Pan Athletic Center. Mr. Kingery had not returned to campus since his 25th Reunion in 2000, and it was great to see him remembering and reliving so much. And, he was surprised to receive some of his old hardware.

A 6x All American, as well as a New England Record Holder in the 200 Free, 500 Free, and 200 IM, Mr. Kingery’s School Record in the IM stood for 23 years! In 1974, he joined Jon Croll ’74, Duncan Pyle ’74, and fellow Legend Mark List ’74 at the Eastern Championships; the four combined to give Andover an incredible 4th-place finish in the team competition, a remarkable accomplishment. Mr. Kingery went on to swim at Stanford, where at PAC-10s in 1979, he split a 44.8 in the 4x100 Free Relay. To put that in perspective, only two swimmers in Andover’s history have had a faster split: Max Hunger ’20 and Arnold Su ’20 (see below).

On Saturday morning, Dan Gilbert ’90 helped arrange to have an open lap swim at the Christopher Lynn ’65 Pool. Seven people showed up by 7:15AM! Over two hours, more than 30 people showed up, including former Coach Loring Strudwick and former Captain Scott Randall ‘80—although it did not seem as though anyone younger than the Class of 1995 made it. We will see about an afternoon swim in future years!

During that open swim, Andover’s most recent swimmer to hold an individual National Record, Legend David Kennedy ’60, came to the new pool to check it out. Mr. Kennedy was a star of the Alumni Swim Meet we hosted in 2012 as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Andover Swimming.

Arriving at Andover as a new 11th grader from Tampa, Mr. Kennedy quickly found his way to the record board, and by the end of his senior year, he had set, and re-set, the National Record in both the 100 Fly and the 200 IM. A reporter for the Phillipian once wrote, “Dave Kennedy set his weekly national prep school record,” and the author’s of the yearbook labeled him “Andover’s aquatic genius” and “boy porpoise,” and his fellow seniors voted him “mature” for the senior superlatives. He continued his career at Princeton, where he was a 2x All American and where his roommate, Jed Graef, won a gold medal in the 200 Back at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

During the all-Reunion lunch, Coach Fox was able to introduce Mr. Kennedy to fellow Andover and Princeton alum, Max Hunger. During his two years at Andover, Max became an 11x All American—with 7 of those in individual events, more than any other swimmer in school history—and held the New England Record in the 200 Free as well as the School Record holder in the 50 Free and 500 Free.

Beginning Saturday evening, the focus of the weekend shifted to the Class of 2020, who departed for Spring Break at the end of New Englands at Hotchkiss not knowing they would not return to campus. After a Baccalaureate service in the Chapel, which included outstanding remarks from Abi Ndikum ’20 and former Head of School John Palfrey, the members of the Class went to their “prom.”

In the middle of the prom, former School Record holder and 6x All American Sam Donchi ’20 texted asking to see the new pool. Sam, Arnold Su, Riku Tanaka ’20, and Brandon Garcia ’20 made it over and were able to see their Easterns banner. Because the 2020 Easterns win is already marked with a banner at the pool, the group decided that Sam should take the one in the photo with him. During his Post-Graduate year at Andover, Brandon was a 3x All American, and across his four years on the team, Riku was the Plunge Legend and an excellent leader. Finally, Arnold was a 15x All American—more than any other person in Andover history.

On Sunday morning, the Class of 2020 finally had its ceremony.

(Andover, MA) – The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) has announced the “National Dual Meet Rankings,” times performed during the season are converted to points, and then total points scored are compared across schools. This year, Andover placed 5th among all independent and public schools in the United States. Among only independent schools, Andover placed 3rd. This marks the 10th time since 2011 that Andover has been among the Top 25 programs in the US across all independent and public schools.

**Coaches Receive National Award**

(San Antonio, TX) -- The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) has recognized Head Coach David Fox and the rest of Andover's coaching staff with the David H. Robertson Excellence in Coaching Award.

Since Fox was named Head Coach of the Boys' Swimming and Diving program in 2012, Andover has won five Eastern Championships, eleven New England Championships, and has a dual-meet record of 80-3. During this time, 80 Andover swimmers have been named All-Americans, and they have broken 361 National, Eastern, class, pool, meet, school, and New England records.

Past recipients of the David H. Robertson Excellence in Coaching Award include Bolles's Gregg Troy, Williston's Wilmot Babcock, Spring Branch's Richard Quick, Wilson High's Dick Hannula, and Andover's Paul Murphy.

Additional photos from Reunion. I am with David Kennedy ‘60 at the new pool. He held National
High School records in both 100 Fly and 200 IM. Later in the day, Kennedy met fellow Andover and Princeton alum, Max Hunger ‘20. Having had Commencement cancelled in 2020, the Class had one as part of their 5th Reunion. Finally got to congratulate and thank Max, Brandon Garcia, Riku Tanaka, Arnold Su, and Sam Donchi in person.

Andover Legend JOHN KINGERY '75, back on campus for his 50th Reunion, got to pick up some surprise hardware. A 6x All American, as well as a New England Record holder in the 200 Free, 500 Free, and 200 IM, John's School Record in the IM of 1:59.2 stood for 23 years! In 1974, he joined JOHN CROLL '74, DUNCAN PYLE '74, and fellow All-Time Great Mark List '74 at the Eastern Championships--the four of them combined to give Andover an incredible 4th place finish in the team competition. John went on to Stanford, where he split a 44.8 on a relay in 1979!
