The holiday season can be extra stressful for our neurodivergent kiddos leading to a feeling of disregulation or loss of physical or emotional control. Here are a few ideas for helping your kids regulate (calm down), when they are stressed or beginning to lose their cool.

There are many different things you can do to help your child get centered depending on their age and interests. The more you practice with them the easier it will be for them to try these on their own in the future:

1. Ask them to help with something they are good at.
2. Count backwards with them or for them.
3. Do some type of repetitive physical activity like jumping jacks.
4. Blow bubbles or have them blow something like a pom pom or through a straw.
5. Offer a stuffed animal, pillow or blanket to cuddle or encourage them to use lots of energy to squeeze and release the item several times.
6. Talk them through daydreaming about the perfect day or the perfect place to be.
7. Offer paper to rip up
8. Hug or offer a hand to squeeze or squeeze in a rhythm and have them copy the rhythm.
