Mayor Menino once said to me when referring to access in Boston buildings "Lisa, it's not old buildings, it's old thinking". To this day, I loved that he said this. I have been to vineyards in California built in the 1800s with better access than new buildings in Boston.

Yesterday was the 33rd anniversary the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. I acquired a disability 23 years ago and the ADA has been instrumental to maintaining my independence. Also yesterday, I was shut out of a meeting (again) due to lack of access (parking lot is not accessible). I write again because this still happens often, too much. It's hard to not be included in work meetings or life in general.

My call to action is that you ensure people with disabilities are included in your DEI plans, that you consider access (physical, visual, auditory, etc.) when you plan meetings, that when you post or write a report you consider adding a written description of visuals, and that once in a while, you stop and think about access, that it is not universal, that after 33 years it's still inequitable, and then consider how you can be part of the solution.

As of 2021, there are over 233K Individuals in the Massachusetts labor force with a disability.
Prevalence of Disability in the Labor Force: In 2021, Cognitive Difficulty was the most prevalent disability type among labor force participants at 29.4%, followed by Hearing Difficulty (19.5%), Physical Difficulty (18%), Independent Living Difficulty (14.6%), Visual Difficulty (13.8%), and Self-Care Difficulty (4.7%).
Labor Force Participation: The number of people with disabilities in the Massachusetts labor force has increased by 10.2% from 212,208 in 2019 to 233,785 in 2021.
Employment to Population Ratio: In 2021, the employment to population ratio for the general population was 73.6%, whereas the employment to population ratio for people with disabilities was 40.9%.
Working from Home: Although the pandemic period significantly increased work from home opportunities for people with disabilities, a person with disabilities was still less likely to work from home than the general population in 2021. 23.2% of the general population worked from home in 2021 compared to 5.2% in 2019, whereas the work from home rates for people with disabilities were 17.4% and 6.5%, respectively.
Note: The above statistics refer to the civilian non-institutionalized population of Massachusetts age 16+, with the exception of the employment to population ratio which only includes age 16-64.
