It's that time again! Mr. Howard and I will be visiting schools to talk about this Summer's program.

There will be two groups this year: a 7th grade group and an 8th grade group. The 7th grade group will explore physical science in the outdoors, from paddling a canoe to casting a fly rod! 8th grade will be investigating Earth and environmental science along the Elk River watershed.

I've attached a link to the form to sign kids up. A couple things to note:

First, please make sure parent contact information is accurate. I've thrown out submissions in the past if I can't get ahold of the parent. Being at the High School, I don't have access to everyone's information.

Second, the student must sign up for Summer School, *in addition* to filling this out. That ensures they get put on the roster.

Third, we need to hear from students why they think they can do the projects we have planned. Generally, I start by looking at the paragraphs students have to write, and then building my list from that. Even kids who have done it in the past will need to make sure they write that well. We can take 15 kids for each group, so we want to know that the ones we take are going to get the work done.

If you have any questions, please contact myself ([email protected]) or Mr. Howard ([email protected]).

We are excited to open enrollment for Summer SOPE 2026! SOPE-Discovery School is open to McDonald County students in grades 7th and 8th. This program immerses students in the local natural and cultural environments of McDonald County, and engages students in studying how society and the environment....

Here is the final story map created by SOPE 2025 students! They explored local watersheds and conducted scientific experiments and research to learn about how the water moves from the hills of the Ozarks all the way to the Gulf in order to create this Story Map. Take a look! It's 100% student work!

SOPE 2025 explored their local stream systems and conducted experiments and research to learn what happens between here and the Gulf.

Yesterday, we spent some time collecting blackberries, and making Mr Jones panic about possible poison ivy “outbreaks!” Turns out, it was just nettle.

Today, we spent the morning catching crawdads for the boil! We even cooked a cobbler with yesterday’s blackberries!

Today, in order to collect information on the river system between the Elk and the Gulf, students visited the Oklahoma Aquarium in Tulsa!

Huge thanks to a former SOPE student and her friend for helping chaperone today’s trip. They also took some of the photos.

I haven’t kept you guys updated this week since I haven’t taken as many pictures until today.

We’ve done lots of fishing and data collecting, analyzing biodiversity, writing and working on the story map, learning to cast a fly rod and doing some archery!

Today, we started off conducting some water quality tests in the first order stream on the state park. Then, students used their information to work on first drafts for information to go into their story map. We ended the day with some fishing!

Today, we toured the Museum of Native American History in Bentonville. Students evaluated how the tools used by Native Americans changed over time, and how it reflected the changes in cultures. Then, they went back to the classroom to integrate what they learned at the museum with their timeline marking the changes in Missouri ecosystems over time. This information will be used to inform their final project they’ll be working on throughout Summer School!

Today, we started off creating a timeline of natural history in Missouri from the Ice Age to the present before we went to Big Sugar Creek State Park to learn about karst and take some water quality measurements!

I usually post daily, but it’s been a busy week!

Monday, we started off the Summer learning about observations and practicing scientific sketching. On Tuesday we practiced how to collect macro invertebrates for stream quality monitoring. Today, we practiced using maps in very wet conditions (I feel like I was mislead by the “cloudy with a 20% chance of rain” forecast) before learning to use some of the tech we have at the HS to monitor abiotic factors in the stream.

We’re off to great start, and I’m excited about what these kids are going to do!
