Century Oak is ready for the weekend. Our budget has been laid to rest, a few distances remain unaccounted for, and one rider has been waiting on the flat longer than we’d like to admit.

Wishing everyone a spooktacular weekend at the show! May your rounds be uneventful and your horses reserve their spooking for the designated decorations.

We all know the real horror begins November 1. 🎃

One of my favorite parts of teaching lessons in the fall is watching the tension of a long day slowly fade from these young girls the minute they spend time with a horse. Fall is a beautiful but busy season. It’s a balancing act between school, friendships, extra-curricular activities, sibling schedules, order, time management… all of the things that don’t seem to matter during the summer. I’m just happy to be a part of their weekly schedule, even if for a short time. 💕

Century Oak merch is here!

From classic barn favorites to the horse personalities we all know a little too well, there’s something for riders, horse show moms, and anyone whose favorite place is the barn.

You’ll find Century Oak staples alongside designs that any horse lover can enjoy.

Our collection lives in our family’s Eggscobar Bros shop, so you can browse both in one place. I’ve loved creating these and can’t wait to hear your favorites!

A little back-to-school reminder about riding goals, practice, and progress… 🐴

We know our riders balance school, homework, family, sports, and many other activities. At Century Oak Equestrian, we never expect horses to be every rider’s only interest, and there is no single “right” level of involvement.

One lesson per week can be perfect for a rider whose goal is to learn, build confidence, enjoy horses, and progress at a comfortable pace. Those goals are every bit as meaningful as competitive ones.

At the same time, expectations must match the amount of time a rider can commit. Riding is a physical skill developed through repetition, consistency, fitness, feel, and partnership with the horse. A rider in the saddle once per week will naturally progress differently than someone riding two, three, or four times per week. That is not a criticism of either rider, they are simply following different paths.

For students who own their horses, lessons do not have to be their only saddle time each week. With an adult present, and as long as the horse, rider, weather, and conditions are appropriate, riders may consider using additional days to practice familiar flatwork skills from previous lessons. The purpose is not to teach themselves something new, but to reinforce what they have already learned: transitions, rhythm, balance, steering, position, and clear communication with their horse.

Extra practice does not have to mean extra jumping. In fact, most of it shouldn’t!

Flatwork is the foundation of everything we do over fences. Rhythm, balance, straightness, adjustability, accurate turns, correct leads, and a rider’s independent position are all developed on the flat. A jump does not create those skills; it reveals how well they have been established. Put simply, good flatwork is what makes good jumping possible.

This also connects to a familiar expression riders often hear from trainers: “It’s never the horse’s fault.”

That phrase is not meant to say that a rider is bad, that a child is being blamed, or that every imperfect moment is somehow a personal failure. It is a longstanding horsemanship principle that reminds us not to label or punish the horse when something goes wrong. Instead, we look at the entire picture. Was the horse properly prepared? Were our aids clear? Did we maintain the right rhythm and balance? Was the horse confused, worried, tired, uncomfortable, or simply still learning?

The goal is not to assign blame, it is to develop thoughtful riders who can problem-solve, take responsibility for the things within their control, listen to their horses, and try again with better understanding.

Whether a rider comes once a week to enjoy a special hour with a horse or is working toward serious competitive goals, both paths are welcome here. We simply want each rider’s goals, expectations, and level of commitment to support one another so that progress remains positive, safe, and rewarding for both horse and rider.

Happy first day of September!🐎
