Last week, we had the opportunity to hear from Steve Forbes, internationally renowned publisher, businessman and politician, as he shared his insights on the American economy, entrepreneurship, and what lies ahead in the future.

Students had the opportunity to ask Forbes questions and hear his thoughts on topics that matter to the next generation of business leaders. Steve Forbes also spoke at a luncheon for invited guests that followed in the banquet hall of the G. Ross Anderson Jr. Student Center. Steve Forbes spoke at the Poinsett Club in Greenville the previous evening.

It was an honor to have Steve Forbes on campus for these events. Special thanks to the Center for Finance and Economics at Anderson University for hosting the event and to the Young America’s Foundation for sponsoring the event.

To celebrate Community Week, students and staff answered the question, “What does community mean to you?” Community Week is an intentional gathering that creates space for students to be seen, valued, and connected as members of one campus family. We are grateful for the community that has been cultivated on our campus over the years.

We are proud to announce that Anderson University has earned the top spot among private universities in South Carolina and ranks #16 among all private regional universities in the South, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 “Best Colleges” rankings.

The rankings reflect two decades of deliberate growth that has drawn more qualified students, more rigorous academic programs and more accomplished faculty to Anderson’s campus while elevating the University’s national profile among the country’s leading comprehensive Christian institutions.

Anderson University President Evans P. Whitaker says that growth has always served a larger purpose. “We believe education is ultimately about more than preparing students for a career. It is about preparing them for human flourishing: the capacity to live meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling lives while contributing to the flourishing of their families, professions, communities and society,” President Whitaker said. “Our Christian foundation informs our understanding of human dignity, vocation, community and the responsibilities that accompany knowledge and influence. Faith does not narrow our intellectual ambitions. It gives them depth and purpose.”

This morning at campus worship, Dr. Lynneth Miller Renberg, Associate Professor of History and Associate Director of the Honors College, equated Christ with the theological virtue of hope. Referencing Romans 5, she claimed that once we understand that Christ is hope, we can more easily understand hope, saying, “Our hope is not tenuous, our hope is steady. It is there when life is hard, and it is there when life is easy, and it does not change, because Christ does not change.”

Romans 5:2-5 says, “Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”—Romans 5:2-5

At its heart, Opening Convocation is a celebration of the founding of the University, the arrival of our students back to campus, and the recognition of the values and traditions we love and hold dear. 

Dr. Evans P. Whitaker inspired the campus with these words: “A classical university sets out not simply to answer, ‘what can I do?’, but also ‘what is true, what is good, what is beautiful, and what kind of person should I become?’ Those are among the questions that gave birth to the university itself, and Anderson University still seeks to do that whole work. In fact, we’re passionate about it. Indeed, education is incomplete until it begins to cultivate something like the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, and opens us all as well to the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. They quietly remind us that education is not merely acquiring skills or accumulating credentials. Formation is meant to be visible.”
