Are you a UAA student looking for a great job? We're hiring!

Our student workers have a mix of responsibilities from digitizing and describing collection materials to pulling boxes and Rare Books for researcher requests. Plus participating in outreach efforts like exhibits or events. We're not going to lie, sometimes some of the tasks can be a little tedious, but the Archives has amazing collections and really great staff.

To be eligible for a student position at UAA, you have to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours this semester in the UA system and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA (that's university policy). The Archives is pretty flexible with scheduling but your working hours will have to be between 9 and 5, M-F.

We love celebrating when authors use our materials in publications. Here's a new one that was just dropped off today: Baking Up Gold by Bridgette J. Preston. If you've followed us for a while, you know we love a good cookbook! This one will be available from the Consortium Library soon.

What a spectacular gift we received last week: the diaries of Salvatore Fruscella, a US Army Lieutenant who served in Alaska from 1942 to 1943. These diaries document not only his daily activities (hint: he wrote a LOT of letters) but those of his unit as well. The diary entries start on the troop transport ship to Alaska and end when he was required to ship them to the Dept. of War. The diaries were returned to him later.

Thanks so much to James Fruscella who not only cared for the diaries and donated them to us, but hand-carried them cross-country to make sure they arrived here safe and sound. It was such a joy meeting James and learning about his father.

As archivists, we tend to see a lot of interesting letterhead and personal stationery.

This one, on a letter from 1888 written to Richard Harris of Juneau from a family member in Alleghany City PA, is apparently reminding us to darn our socks. Or possibly to straighten up and fly right. We're not sure. But it sure is sparkly! (I couldn't quite get the full metallic shimmer in the photo, sorry).

At any rate, whether you need to darn your socks or straighten up and fly right, consider this a reminder that you still have time!

By the way, we don't allow real moths in the archives. Sadly. They can be cute but we try to keep an insect-free workplace.

When you have to put boxes away in row 10, and pull boxes from rows 1, 16, and 20. And the shelves can only be moved one at a time. I'm very much looking forward to our next set of compact shelving which will be motorized.

The rows move really smoothly but it's still a whole lot of spinning.

Searching through some old UAA/APU Consortium Library photos today and ran across this 1975 view of the Library's reference desk. Do you remember when it was in this location?

We're enjoying this photo that came in a recent collection donation.

Anybody remember seeing this sign? The collection doesn't have a lot of context, but the photo was likely taken in the 1950s.
