Statement of Purpose and Scope
The University of Alaska Anchorage’s College of Health and Social Welfare is an academic center of
excellence at which the diversity of faculty, staff and students reflects the diversity of Alaska and
where all come together as an engaged, energized and inspired learning community. The Diversity
Committee wa
s established for the purpose of promoting proportionate representation of Alaska’s
diverse populations at every level of endeavor within the College, in accordance with the College’s
Comprehensive Plan. Anchorage’s role as the state’s economic and service hub, combined with Alaska’s cultural heritage,
gives rise to a local population richly varied in background, values and experience. Accordingly, the
Committee seeks to achieve or retain proportionate representation within the College across the
following areas:
Economic and educational background,
Sexual orientation and gender identity,
Age,
Disability,
Culture and ethnicity,
Citizenship status, and
Religion. Recognizing that the College’s mission is multi-faceted, the Committee will work to foster diversity
in these areas across the widest possible spectrum of activity, including:
Student recruitment and retention,
Faculty and staff recruitment and retention,
Curriculum content, delivery and assessment,
Faculty and student research opportunities and funding,
Research subject matter and populations, and
Service opportunities and recognition
