4th grade students studying fossils at Ipalook
Ipalook just hosted our spring Piuraagiaqta carnival! We had a lot of people attend and support the various clubs and classrooms at the school. The carnival has typically been a way for classroom teachers to raise money to buy classroom supplies each year. This year, it has been expanded to include several clubs throughout the school. Choir, JNYO, and Student Council have all benefited from the fundraising. For the spring carnival, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, and ECE will all also benefit. Teachers buy things like books, class equipment, and things that would otherwise not be an option to get because of limited supply funds per class.
Ms. Crowder in Kindergarten was able to save the money made from her booth in the fall and the spring to combine it toward the purchase of a kitchenette set. These sets are designed for early childhood classrooms and are quite expensive. This will benefit all of her students as well as the students for years to come.
Teachers are all given the option to participate in the carnival and they are also allowed to work together to run a booth or they can come up with something on their own. Choir has been responsible for running the carnivals this year and we keep the money raised from food sales. We have also picked up games that teachers opted not to do.
Choir will be using our funds to help with the Disney trip this October. Student council has hosted the veteran’s day luncheon for the community, JNYO used their funds to travel to Anchorage and purchase awards for students to be given out at the May student of the month assembly.
All large fundraisers this year have been sponsored by both Choir and JNYO and each event has also had classroom teachers or other clubs join in. We recently co-hosted a fun night with the high school and helped them generate nearly $5,000 for their trip in April. It has been our privilege to include others in the fundraising efforts because we cannot do it alone and we would rather work together than compete with each other for funds.
