URGENT: Program Deadline September 30

The Employment Security Department has a new program to provide partial relief from an increase in employer’s state unemployment tax rate for 2021. ESD recently sent information about this program to all employers. We want to make sure you are aware of the program and application process.

“Benefit charges” are calculated based on the amount of unemployment claims that are paid to your employees. Subsequently, your unemployment tax rate (SUTA rate) each year is based on these benefit charges. Applying for this program will offset part of your benefit charges, which will reduce your 2021 SUTA tax rate if you had employees on standby unemployment. The offset applies to unemployment benefits paid in the first two quarters of 2020 to employees who:

Were temporarily laid off as a result of COVID-19; and
Have since returned to work for you.

The application is simple, but the deadline to apply for this program is September 30, 2020. Employment Security will begin reviewing applications in October and will notify you by mail whether your request was approved or denied. The decision is not eligible for appeal.
