NEW COURSE OFFERING!

First 10 Students in JUST A463 Biosocial Criminology Receive a $500 Tuition Award

The School of Justice and Human Services will support tuition payments in the amount of $500 for the first 10 students enrolling in JUST A463 Biosocial Criminology (CRN 75086) for Fall 2026. The student award will be applied directly to student accounts after the Add/Drop deadline on September 4, 2026.

Biosocial Criminology explores how biology and environment interact to shape behavior and influence crime. Students will examine topics such as stress, trauma, brain development, and criminal behavior while exploring concepts related to integrated crime theory and contemporary explanations of offending behavior.

This course is particularly valuable for students interested in criminology, legal studies, psychology, neuroscience, public health, and social work. Students will gain insight into the connections between brain development, behavior, mental health, and justice systems, while exploring how research can inform laws, courts, public policy, and legal practice. The course is also an excellent option for students seeking a criminology capstone experience that integrates biological, psychological, and social perspectives on crime.

Last year, the UAA Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC) published the Violence Towards EMS: Research Literature Findings fact sheet, which highlights a disturbing and growing issue facing the emergency medical services (EMS) workforce: workplace violence.

The research, grounded in a review of current literature, reveals that EMS personnel are disproportionately affected by verbal and physical assaults while performing their essential, high-risk duties.

Studies cited in the fact sheet show the injury rate among EMS personnel is approximately three times the national average across all occupations.

Author Bri Moffat claims that "[f]urther research is needed to explore all aspects of violence towards EMS, from why individuals become violent to how the violence impacts the EMS system at all
levels."

We are deeply saddened by the news of these Anchorage Firefighters being assaulted over the holiday weekend and hope they recover quickly and fully.

Late during shift on the 4th of July, Station 4 crews were assaulted by a patient during a routine medical call.
The firefighters assaulted, sustained injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

Events like these have, unfortunately, become more and more common.

Unpredictable scenarios compounded with an extremely short staffed fire department results in more workplace injuries as well as both physical and mental burnout.

Violence against first responders is never acceptable.

This virtual event brings Alaskans together to deepen understanding of restorative justice, strengthen local initiatives, and build networks that support healing‑centered responses to harm. Sessions will explore lived experiences, legal pathways, facilitator roles, and collaborative program development.
