ASD World Languages organized and hosted its 3rd Annual ADLII -- Alaska Dual Language and Immersion Institute, this past Thursday and Friday. 60 participants from around the state (namely, ASD, Yupiit SD, and Southwest Region SD) came together for two solid days of learning -- diving deep into implementing a solid immersion program! Invited guest presenters were Maria Cristina Ladas of Arizona and Lynn Fulton of Delaware. Both are amazing immersion experts that guided the group over these past two days. Save the dates for ADLII 2027, to be held June 3-4, 2027 on the campus of University of Alaska Anchorage.

Western Alaska high school seniors walk across the stage after tumultuous year The Anchorage and Lower Kuskokwim school districts held a small graduation ceremony for seniors displaced by Typhoon Halong.

Turnagain Elementary School's Russian Immersion Program honored its 5th graders, completing 6 years of Russian immersion and moving on to Romig Middle School next fall. Two recent senior graduates of the program returned to Turnagain to celebrate with these students, and share some words of wisdom and motivation. Congratulations! Поздравления!

West High School's Spanish Immersion Completion ceremony was a huge success! Congratulations to these amazing young men and women for completing 13 years of Spanish Immersion!

ASD's Russian Immersion Program started in 2004 and was the very first Russian Immersion Program in the U.S. Ten years ago the program celebrated its first graduating class. Fast forward to 2026, and we celebrate the current graduating class. It was an extra special treat that Elena Farkas returned to Anchorage for this celebration. Ms. Farkas was the very first teacher in the program and also followed students through grades 7-12, developing curriculum along the way. Congratulations to these amazing seniors! Поздравления

Happy Retirement to three living legends of the Spanish Immersion Program at Government Hill/Romig/West! After 29 years of service, Sr. Eric Elliott of Government Hill and Sra. Anaely Hernandez of West Anchorage High School (who also taught at Government Hill, Romig Middle School, and Chugiak High School -- all in Spanish Immersion) are retiring. Also retiring is ASD's Deputy Superintendent Sr. Sven Gustafson. After 33 years in public education, Sr. Gustafson also holds the record of being the only ASD (former) principal of two schools (Romig and West for 16 years) with two immersion programs (Spanish and Russian)!

This past Thursday, Dimond HS Japanese Immersion students had the rare opportunity to meet with Japan's former Minster of Foreign Affairs and current member of Japan's House of Representatives, Ms. Yoko Kamiwaka. She was extremely personable and engaged with the students, and extremely impressed with their level of Japanese. We're so proud of ASD's Japanese Immersion Program, its students, teachers, and graduates!

It's that special time of the year when we start to celebrate our seniors, and others. This past Wednesday we celebrated ASD's German Immersion seniors at their immersion completion ceremony at Service High School. Glückwunsch!!!
