When COVID-19 reached Alaska, John Laurance served as a lead microbiologist for the state’s SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic program in Anchorage. Years of infectious disease work had prepared him for that role. That experience also pushed his career in a new direction--toward prevention, program management, and leadership.

That shift brought Laurance to UAA’s Master of Public Health program. He graduated in 2026 and now serves as Health Program Manager for Adolescent Health Programs with the State of Alaska and president-elect of the Alaska Public Health Association (APHA).

In our latest alumni spotlight, John reflects on seeing public health beyond his own specialty, the connections that hold Alaska’s public health community together, and how others may recognize leadership in us before we recognize it in ourselves.

Tomorrow is the last day of this year's UMED Farmer's Market!

If you haven't already, tomorrow is your last chance to stop by the Alaska Airlines Center from 3 - 6 p.m. for the chance to shop from local vendors. The goodies up for grabs range from fresh produce, baked goods, handmade soaps, local honey, and canned goods. Our office has sampled some of these products (repeatedly) to ensure their quality, and we can assure you that they are top tier!

This week's is Heather Marron, B.B.A. Marketing and Management '09.

Marron's favorite UAA memories come from her freshman year, when she lived in the residence halls on campus and played intramural volleyball. One of her classes led her to an internship with a local business, where she met the supervisor that she works with today at Alaska Communications. She's also the president of the Alaska chapter for the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)! Read more about this alumna here: heyor.ca/PrUnqV

Did you visit the petting zoo at Campus Kickoff this weekend?

We "kicked off" the school year with a bang, getting the chance to talk to hundreds of students, community members and alumni. We also hosted a petting zoo for the second year in a row, which was a huge hit with visitors! We're so excited to see what this year brings.

Drop your petting zoo pics in the comments! We'll go first.

Our first Seawolf Session, a Galápagos expedition with James Evans, B.A. '16, was a huge hit!

Over 50 people joined us last week for our inaugural Seawolf Session. Evans, UAA's Chief of Photography, volunteered his time to show off stunning photos of birds, iguanas, tortoises, snakes and sea lions. He also gave us a history and geography lesson of the Galápagos Islands, explaining that the animals on each island have actually evolved distinctly from their neighbors on other islands. We can't wait for our next Seawolf Session in November, a history lesson from local historian David Reamer, B.A. '15.

Let's look back at over 20 years of Campus Kickoff as we get ready to celebrate it again this Saturday, August 22nd!

A beloved UAA tradition, the first Campus Kickoff (CKO) was back in 2003, marking this year's as the 23rd annual CKO. Over the years, entertainment has included selfie stations, break dancing, comedy shows, butt sketches and flame dancers to name a few! This year will bring a petting zoo, rock climbing, a caricature artist, food trucks and more-- we can't wait to see you there!

Our very first Seawolf Session is tonight, and we have an option to attend virtually!

James Evans, B.A. '16 is UAA's Chief of Photography and Videography and an amazing visual storyteller. He'll present photos from his recent trip to the Galápagos Islands and have a conversation about photography, storytelling, wildlife and the natural world. Join us tonight on the third floor of the UAA/APU Consortium Library, or if you can't be there in person, use this Zoom link to watch from home: alaska.zoom.us/j/85063231457
