Have questions about the origin of the universe? Read this short but incredibly informative take by the renowned Dr. Stephen Meyer on why an endless cycle of an expanding universe isn’t very plausible. 🪐✨
As an alternative to the Big Bang, some scientists envisioned an endless cycle in which the universe would expand, then collapse, then re-initiate its expansion (by some unknown mechanism), and so on. But MIT physicist Alan Guth has shown the implausibility of such a perpetually oscillating universe. He showed that the entropy (or disorder) of matter and energy would increase in each cycle, leaving less energy available to do work each time. But that means that the universe would eventually reach a “heat death” with no organized energy available to do work at all. In fact, our universe already would have reached this point if it had existed for an infinite time. Since it has not reached such a state, it follows—even assuming an oscillating universe—that the universe has not existed forever and must have had a beginning.
