We have Hand Foot and mouth going around. Right now it’s only in room D. Please check your child for little red dots. They usually have a fever a few days prior to the dots showing up. They will show up around their mouth, hands and feet but usually will spread over the whole body. The red dots will blister, pop and heal over. They can return after all blisters have scabbed over. Oatmeal or baking soda baths can help with itchiness but thats’s about it! As always if you have questions just ask?

What makes their program special
Strong Connections: Students spend two years with the same teacher to build strong relationships with both the student and their family. Teachers truly get to know their students which positively benefits students both academically and social emotionally.

Multi-age classrooms: Our multi-age classrooms provide older students the opportunity to model responsibility and the love of learning for their younger classmates.

Parent participation: Volunteering is a fundamental feature of our program.
Volunteer opportunities include:

- Helping in the classroom

- Planting and harvesting our garden

- Field trips

- Our annual auction fundraiser

- Kincaid sledding party

- Winter Crafts Day

- End of the Year Picnic

Community: Students thrive in a caring community that fosters empathy, compassion and a sense of personal responsibility.

Curriculum: We have flexibility in the materials we use, the ways that we deliver instruction and in the ways that students demonstrate their learning.

Portfolio Assessment: Chinook Open Optional uses a student created portfolio, reflections, and student led conferences to celebrate growth and share student progress with family members.

💻 For a detailed overview of their program, please visit the Chinook Open Optional website.

Sand Lake

Anchorage School District Dual Language Immersion Programs

At the elementary level, starting in kindergarten, students spend half of their school day learning English. The other half of their day is spent learning academic content in another language. All programs have, or will have, a middle and high school continuation strand. ASD’s dual language immersion programs are programs of choice for parents who would like their children to have the advantage of becoming proficient in two or more languages (English and a subsequent language) by the time they complete the kindergarten through 12th grade sequence of the language immersion program. There are close to 3,000 students enrolled in ASD’s dual language immersion programs.
