Neurodivergent elders often experience loneliness not because they lack social desire but because their neurological design has historically been misunderstood. The model of fault, perspective, awareness, and flow provides a pathway to reframe isolation. When individuals and communities correctly identify fault, respect differing perspectives, increase awareness, and create environments where neurodivergent communication styles can exist naturally, loneliness can transform into meaningful relational flow.

Power to Change NDPC Neurodivergent Relationship Model
(Fault – Perspective – Awareness – Flow)
This model helps people understand neurodivergent behaviors and relationships by moving from blame to understanding and collaboration.
Fault:
People often misinterpret neurodivergent behaviors (like avoiding eye contact, missing tasks, or emotional shutdown) as laziness or disrespect.
Perspective:
Reframe behavior through a neurological lens, recognizing differences in sensory processing, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.
Awareness:
Identify triggers, emotional patterns, and sensory overload while building skills for self-regulation and communication.
Flow:
Create supportive environments through clear communication, structure, sensory-friendly spaces, and collaborative problem-solving.
Outcome:
When people move from fault to perspective, through awareness, into flow, relationships improve and neurodivergent individuals can thrive with dignity, understanding, and support.

Loneliness is common among older adults due to factors like retirement, health changes, and the loss of social connections. For neurodivergent elders, the experience can be more intense because of lifelong differences in communication, social interaction, and sensory processing. Neurodivergence includes conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Many older adults were never diagnosed when they were younger, which may have led to years of feeling misunderstood or socially disconnected. As social networks shrink with age, this can increase the risk of isolation and mental health challenges.
However, supportive communities, better understanding of neurodivergence, and accessible mental health support can help reduce loneliness and improve connection and well-being for neurodivergent elders.
