Annie and Penny, two of our Archangels who row crew with the Anchorage Rowing Association were down in Seward competing in the “Tail of the Bear” regatta this weekend. They ran into a very unexpected fellow Archangel, our very own Deacon Gus Azpilcueta! Turns out he was there to welcome the ARM Cuauhtémoc, the Mexican Navy’s iconic 254-foot tall ship, on its four-day goodwill stop in Resurrection Bay.

From racing shells to a three-masted Navy training ship - not a bad way to spend a weekend. Way to represent Lumen Christi on and off the water, Annie, Penny and Deacon Gus!

This afternoon after the final bell rang, a group of Lumen Christi parents and students stayed behind -- not for practice, not for a meeting, but to build. Three hours later, 8 ft. folding tables in 6 classrooms had been replaced by 120 brand-new desks which now stand at the ready for students on Monday morning.

No one made them stay late, we simply asked. They showed up, they rolled up their sleeves, they got to work -- side by side, tools in hand, building something that will support learning at our school for years to come.

This is what community looks like. Thank you to every parent and student who gave up their afternoon today. Our Lumen Christi family never ceases to amaze us.

Just yesterday, it seems these students walked through our doors as wide-eyed 7th graders - our "7e's." Today, they stood before us as the Senior Class of 2027, and led our school in Mass with a quiet grace and reverence that spoke to how far they've come.

Lectors. Gift bearers. Choir cantor. Extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist. In service to our community and to God, they gave freely of their gifts to close out our first full week of school.

We are grateful for their example, and we look forward to the leadership they will offer our school community throughout this year.

Well done, Class of 2027. We're honored to walk this final year with you.

THE SHROUD OF TURIN: WHERE FAITH AND SCIENCE COLLIDE

Join us for a rare and compelling presentation with Dr. Cheryl White, one of the world's foremost scholars on the Shroud of Turin.

Professor Emerita of history at LSU Shreveport and board member of the Shroud of Turin Education and Research Association, Dr. White has studied the Shroud for three decades and made repeated research trips to the Vatican Secret Archives in Rome. She served as historical consultant for the Museum of the Bible's Shroud of Turin exhibit and is a frequent lecturer for the Smithsonian Institution's World History Certificate Program. Her research and commentary have been featured on The History Channel and the Discovery Channel.

Don't miss this unforgettable exploration of history's most studied - and most mysterious - artifact, where centuries of faith meet the rigors of modern science.

Our students deserve great classrooms and we need YOUR hands to help make that happen.

On site this morning: 6 pallets of brand new student desks, some assembly required!

No need to be a seasoned carpenter, if you can turn a screwdriver (or have a power drill to turn it for you) - we need your help tomorrow (Friday, August 28th) at 1:15pm in the gym.

Bring a friend, bring your spouse, bring your power tools, earn Share Hours! Keep your student with you and put them to work as well.

Hands-On History: Archaeology & Anthropology Day!

Mrs. Spiller’s eighth grade US history students stepped into the roles of archaeologists and anthropologists today.

They examined the progression and destruction of a Native American dwelling, sorted through “mystery trash” to piece together who it belonged to and where it came from, and studied coins from different countries, looking closely at symbols, images, and wording to see what each one revealed.

It was a great reminder that history isn’t just something we read about - it’s something we can uncover and investigate ourselves.

This afternoon, Lumen Christi students put their faith into action by teaming up with Alaska Adoption Services to help wrap diapers for their Community Diaper Pantry Program. What would have taken AAS staff 8 hours to do took our mighty Archangels just 40 minutes!

This is what it means to be an Archangel - service, faith and joy in action!

Thank you to Alaska Adoption Services for the opportunity to serve alongside you in supporting families in our community.
