An otter’s fur is its most important tool for staying warm.
Otters have some of the densest fur of any animal and can spend hours each day grooming. By cleaning and fluffing their fur, they trap tiny pockets of air that provide insulation in the cold waters of Katmai’s coast.

Pride Month is a celebration of community, belonging, and the many identities that make our world richer.
At Katmai Conservancy, we believe that public lands are for everyone. Whether you're exploring Katmai from home through the bearcams or experiencing the park in person, you are welcome here. This June, we celebrate and support LGBTQ+ people and their contributions to conservation, science, outdoor recreation, and the communities that help protect wild places.
Happy Pride Month!

Bird is the word here in Katmai.
The bears may get most of the attention, but Katmai’s birds make the landscape just as wild. Featured here are a ptarmigan, swans, a common merganser, and two bald eagles soaring overhead, just a few of the many feathered residents that call Katmai home.

Recently seen in a quiet moment from Katmai National Park and Preserve: a lynx in the brush.
Built for life in the North, lynx have oversized, fur-covered paws for traveling across snow, and sharp hearing that helps them locate prey hidden beneath it. They’re one of the many wild residents of Katmai that are rarely in the spotlight, but always part of the story.

Oh hi there!
As you can see here, porcupine are very skilled tree climbers. They use their long claws and strong tails to balance as they move up through the branches in search of food.

Memorial Day is a time for reflection, gratitude, and remembrance.
As another season begins in Katmai National Park and Preserve, we’re thankful for the chance to gather in and care for places like this. From all of us at Katmai Conservancy, we honor those who gave their lives in service.

Jumping for joy!
Seeing fish jumping in the falls means that summer, and more importantly, bear season is right around the corner.
