For a group of UAA nursing and social work students, a journey to the mountains of rural Peru wasn't about providing healthcare; it was about learning from communities that face many of the same challenges as rural Alaska.
Supported through a $30,000 Faculty Initiative Fund grant from the University of Alaska in partnership with the Alaska AHEC (Area Health Education Center), five students joined Dr. Keri Baker, Assistant Professor in the UAA School of Nursing, for a two-week global health immersion experience in Peru.
Students spent much of their time learning alongside community leaders and observing how local knowledge, public health, and community partnerships work together to improve health outcomes.
