The Unschooling Explorer
Welcome to my unschooling adventure! From Aardonyx to Zuniceratops or Abomasnow to Zygarde I am fol
This weekend my parents took me to Denali National Park, here is what unschooling in Alaska looks like for me.
In 2 days we went over more than 2 weeks worth of classes. Here are the classes we covered and some examples!
General Biology & Zoology - discussed different species of animals including caribou, bear, porcupine, wolves, mountain goats/sheep, moose and multiple birds. We talked about what they eat, where they live, if they hibernate, how long they live, how they adapt to their environment, how to tell tracks/signs apart, and how to tell which animal s**t belongs to. We also talked about conservation and how humans change the environment.
History - we talked about the history of Alaska, the park (and both of the names it has been called), and the sled dog program.
Math - my mom likes to irritate me by making me calculate things as we go. Time, mph, etc.
For Art and technology I am learning how to use my dad's old camera. I have a ton of photos I hope to post soon!
We also read some (Language Arts), and discussed my current favorite music Imagine Dragons (music).
My favorite parts of the trip were getting so close to Caribou, seeing lots of animals and birds, and finally seeing a bear on the way home!
We found the black bear feeding on a dead moose by the highway. It was interesting to watch him and talk about it. My mom recorded a little, we are posting a video in the comments for those that might want to watch it. It was right at sunset so we had to lighten it a bit.
We have been offline for awhile but staying busy! Hopefully we will be posting regularly for awhile!

Drove to Bird Point yesterday to watch for Beluga whales, didn't get to see any but it was nice out and we got to see some waterfalls.

My dad gets to see this amazing view from his work, he can also go to the other side and see the ocean. I would love that!

Last week we went to Point Woronzof and walked along the ice flows taking pictures! I love to take pictures and Dad got a new camera recently and that day he gave me his old one. His old camera was better than mine so I was very excited. I really like watching the ice float on the tide.
Dad had a guy approach him and offer to pay him a few bucks to take a few pics out by the water and email them to him. Of course, he did it for free but they talked while Mom and I walked.

Some people have asked my mom and me what unschooling is. In our case, it is learning based off of my interests with no curriculum or schedule.
For example, here is the Amazon school wish list that I put together for my mom of things I am interested in learning. It is a big list and mom said I can't have them all but we will start with a few at a time! I also love to create and build things so we watch for lego kits and woodworking kits when we can.
